Beatrice
Hastings
the women
in the black cap, black suit, with small eyes
Called an
English poetess in Montmartre, she was born in South Africa.
From there she came to England and then went as a correspondent
to Paris. She spent her life manipulating words, ideas and
people - a master of half truths. She had a turbulent and
violent affair with Modigliani for about two years.

Constantin
Brancusi
the man
with the big black beard
He was considered the father of modern abstract sculpture,
born in Romania, lived in Paris. Unlike the other tormented
artists, Brancusi did not frequent cafés and exuberant parties.
He ate at home, worked and had a happy peaceful life. He
was always pleasant and courteous. Modi considered Brancusi
his mentor and was inspired by his sculptures. His studio
is kept in front of the Pompideau Center in Paris.

Jean
Cocteau
on the
wall in the back room
A poet, an art critic and a writer, the darling of the intellectuals.
Cocteau was always closer to Picasso, but considered Modi
"the simplest and the noblest" of the artists of the heroic
age. Modi treated him with indifference.
This portrait, representing him as a perfect dandy, is now
worth several million dollars.

Lunia
Czechowska
on the
sign outside
A very important person in Modi's life. Lunia and Modi were
very close friends and most possibly loved each other platonically.
Lunia was asked by Modi to run away from her husband, something
she never did. She withstood his charms and offered
him friendship, understanding, intellectual companionship
and a sister-like love instead. Modigliani painted
many portraits of her.
