An Introduction to Pet Gerbils

There are several good reasons to own a pair of gerbils. With proper housing, feeding and care, gerbils can be very fun and entertaining little critters that generally live to be about three years old. As with any pet, however, make sure that you are prepared for the responsibility that comes with purchasing a pair for yourself. The information on this page will help you determine whether or not gerbils would be compatible additions to your home, as well as provide crucial information to making their lives with you as healthy and happy as possible.

Below is a list of some of the advantages to owning a pair of gerbils.

Gerbils are ...

  • Naturally curious, inquisitive, and energetic.
  • Friendly, fairly easy to handle, and generally only bite when they feel threatened.
  • Diurnal, which means that they sleep in short "naps" throughout a 24 hour period, and therefore can be observed and/or played with nearly any time of the day or night.
  • Cleaner than other small pets, due to their meticulous grooming habits and the fact that their bodies have adapted to produce less waste than other rodents.
  • Very entertaining to watch, as they will spend much of their time digging and constructing tunnels, playing with each other and exploring their environment.
  • A great "starter pet" for teaching young children about responsible pet ownership.
