Gerard Mc Keown was born in Ballymena in 1980. He moved to Carlisle in 2000 to do a degree in Literature Studies and Performance Studies at the Cumbria Institute of the Arts, which he completed in 2003. In 2002 he was named as one of Cumbria's top young writers and in 2003 his first play A Short Play About Stealing Stuff From School was shown at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, England.

He returned to Northern Ireland and in 2004 became a popular figure on the Belfast poetry scene.

Gerard's success continued that year when he was long-listed for the Brian Moore Award. In October he taught radio-production and scriptwriting as part of the BBC and in November gave his first University Lecture. In 2005 Gerard joined the Queen's University Writers Group. He had his work published in Fire and Black Mountain Review and performed alongside the poet Lemm Sissay and the novelist Stewart Home.
