The XL computers

Atari 1200XL

1982: With increased competition came a new Atari model, but this one wouldn't be the savior :(

A newer larger but streamlined case with 5 new programmable function keys (F1-F4 and HELP), the 1200XL was the next step in the market with it's CPU capacity 64Kbytes of RAM. It sacrificed the second cartridge port(rarely used anyway) and had some trouble with older software, and thus failed to attract buyers. During 1982 Atari reported better sales on it's 800 model than the 1200XL. This model was stopped and replaced in only 1 year.

Atari also released it's next video game console in '82, the 5200, which is based on it's computer technology

ATARI 600XL

1983: Priced to sell and power to boot, the Atari 600XL has BASIC built-in and better compatibility than the 1200XL. Available on disk is a translator program which further improved compatibility.
