Printable Directions

PART ONE

There are web pages on the Internet that have been made solely using Microsoft Word.  To edit a web page created in Microsoft Word, one must first save it as their own.

  1. Travel to the web page that you would like to edit for your own page.

  1. Go to the File menu at the top of the page and click on the Save As option.

  1. In the window that pops up, chose the location where you want to save the web pages

a.        Next to Save in: , click the ▼ to obtain a list of places where you can store these pages

b.       The best locations are in My Documents, on your Desktop, or on a 3˝ Floppy you have placed in the disk drive.

  1. Now all you have to do is click on the Save button because you should keep the file name that has already be chosen for you.  (Do this for every web page that you intend to edit at some point for your own web site.)

PART TWO

Now that you have all the web pages saved, you can begin to edit these pages, make them into your own personal pages.  Depending on the situation, one might have to give credit to the original creator, however this is not one of those cases.

1.          To retrieve these files, go to the location you chose to save the web pages in.

a.        Use the Start menu or an icon on your Desktop to retrieve pages from My Documents, then open each page by right clicking on the page’s icon and selecting the Edit option.

b.       If you saved on your Desktop, just right click on the individual web page icons, and then click Edit.

c.        Use the Start menu and go to the My Computer option, or use the My Computer icon on your Desktop to access your 3˝ inch Floppy.  Once you have double clicked on the 3˝ Floppy option, right click on each web page to and then click Edit.

2.          Once you have clicked on that option the web page will open in Microsoft Word with various boxes and tabs.  You can now use these boxes and previously set tabs to edit the page just as you would any other document in Word.

a.        Delete the words on the page, and replace them with the appropriate information.

b.       To change the Font, go to the Format menu at the top of the screen, and click on the Font option.

c.        To make a background, go to the Format menu and click on Background.  Sometimes not all options appear, so you might have to click on a  ▼ at the bottom of the drop down menu.

3.          After making these alterations, it is always a good idea to save your work.  You can do this by going to your File menu and choosing the Save option or by clicking on the icon of a 3˝ inch Floppy disk.  (Do not change the name that the computer will automatically give you to save your page as.)

PART THREE

Under the heading Student Pages are the links to all of the webquest pages.  They are currently linked to your instructor’s webquest pages, so you must now alter the location of the links from your instructor’s pages to yours.

  1. Highlight each link by placing your I shaped mouse at the end of the linked word, and dragging the mouse left.

  1. Once the entire link has been highlighted, place your mouse over the highlighted text (the mouse should change from an I shape to a hand), and right click.

  1. Move your mouse down to the option that says Hyperlink, and hover there for a moment as the  ► shifts over to more options.  A new box should open with the option to Edit Hyperlink.  Click on that option.

  1. Under the Text to display heading there should already be something written.  Leave that as is, all that is to be changed is one area under the heading Type the file or Web Page name.  Something similar to this:  http://www.geocities.com/georgisworkshop/index.html  should appear in the box.  All that should be changed is the part that says georgisworkshop.  Delete that text between the two / ‘s, and replace it with your Yahoo ID.  Do this on every link (you can erase the Printable Directions link from your page if you like).

  1. Once again, this is a good time to save your work.

PART FOUR

Now that your web pages are edited to your liking, it is time to post them on the Internet.  It will save you a lot of time and steps if you make sure that you are completely satisfied with the pages you post in this part because you will have to repeat all of the sections of this part if you wish to edit the pages again after this point

1.        Go on the Internet to http://geocities.yahoo.com and enter in your Yahoo ID and Password.

2.        Click on the link to the File Manager located in the Advanced Toolbox on the right side of the page.  Another page may appear before the File Manager opens, just click on the Open File Manager link.

3.        Click on the button that says Upload Files located on the right side of the page.

4.        Click on the Browse button located to the left of the open rectangles.

5.        Where it says Look in:  , choose the location where you have your web pages saved.  (Use the same method as in Part Two, Step One, do this for every page you want to upload at this time.)

6.        When all the rectangles you can use or wish to use are filled, scroll down to the bottom of the page and check off the box next to the text that says Automatically change ".htm" extensions to ".html"

7.        Now click on the button just above the check boxes labeled Upload Files.

8.        The upload should be successful, and you can continue back to the File Manager by clicking on that link.

9.        These pages are now on the Internet, and you can view them by clicking on the view link located on the same line as each web page.

Congratulations, you are done creating your webquest. If you should ever want to change any of your webquest pages, you have to do PART TWO and PART FOUR over again for the pages you wish to edit.  Editing these pages using anything other than Microsoft Word (such as Geocities/ Yahoo) will not work properly.
