| Mikheil Kavelashvili began his career at Dinamo Tbilisi in 1989 making 86 apperances scoring 52 goals. His goalscoring form in the Georgian league alerted Russain side Alania Vladikavkaz and he signed for them at the end of the 1992/93 season. Mikheil did reasonably well in his first season in the Russain league playing 25 games and scoring 9 goals. His second season at the club was much better and he scored 16 goals in 27 apperances. His form alerted English Premiership side Manchester City and they paid 1.6m for him. However his stay in England was disasterous and he only scored 3 goals for Manchester City in 3 seasons. He was eventually loaned out to Swiss champions Grasshoppers Zurich and he began to find his old form scoring 11 goals in 25 apperances. By this time Mikhail was in his last year of his contract at Manchester City and he left City at the end of the 1998/99 season to join Grasshoppers arch rivals FC Zurich. 1999/00 was another bad year for Mikheil as he only played 11 games for FC Zurich scoring just the one goal. However 2000/01 has been one of his best as he finished as the top scorer for FC Zurich with 13 goals and has re-established himself in the Georgian national team. However Mikhail is yet to fully convince his critics his worth to the national team but if he continues to score at the rate he has done he will be a regular for years to come. His goalscoring rate for the national team is not very good but Mikheil is often played as a midfielder rather than his preferred role as a striker. Mikhail recently joined fellow Swiss side Luzern after being released by FC Zurich. |
