| Achray forest and Aberfoyle Landranger 57 Route in brief 26km 500m climb and descent some nice single track |
| The route starts from the forestry parking area 2km east of Aberfoyle at GR542006 and goes north east on the south east side of the Menteith Hills, first on forest track (where there is a discouraging no cycles sign which will need to be ignored), and then on a single track to the unnamed loch at GR0405 72. At the loch the forest road is joined but you need to turn off after 150m into the forest. From here the track descends pleasantly to near West Dullater on the south side of Loch Venacher. Go west beside the loch and turn off beside the gate of some houses, after about 2km, onto the Sustrans track beside the loch. This track is very pleasant indeed. Follow the track and forest road out to Brig o Turk. I recommend eating at the green hut tea room which is immediately after the turn up to Glen Finglas off the A821. The return route is the reverse forest drive past loch Drunkie and then Lochan Reoidhte. If you like a technical descent, and do not mind a climb to get it, then at the cross roads GR 526023 go left (south west). The forest road climbs steeply toward the radio mast below which it ends (GR534018). At the Aberfoyle (south) side of the turning area there is a rocky single track which descends toward Aberfoyle. Descend this crossing one forest road and onto the lower one. Follow this back to the start. If you do not fancy the climb and technical descent go straight across the crossroads and follow forest roads back to the start |
