Adding a brush pile to a habitat is a great way to provide shelter for small animals. However, since we live in such a high fire danger area it not something we can have.
We can have a rock pile though! It sat through the winter with not much activity but this Spring it really came alive. We now have a family of Chipmunks that have made it their home. Apparently the family burrow is under the rock pile and they also use it for shelter. It is a busy place as the babies venture out to find seed and then seek shelter within the rocks when they feel danger is near. We have seen six chipmunks at one time - I assume it is probably the parents and four babies - so cute! |
