No birds nested in our yard this year. I think the continued presence of the Ravens made the little birds think twice about nesting in the yard. We had one Chickadee male that sat on the fence next to the nest box that just sang his little heart out. Unfortunately, he did not attract a mate to share his little home. The Western Bluebirds checked out their nest box several times but did not take up residence.
A pair of White-headed woodpeckers had a nest somewhere close by - the mother has been bringing the baby by and feeding him/her from the suet feeder.
The Black-headed Grosbeaks are doing very well this year. We had three adult males at the feeders and at least one female. The babies arrived in early June and the parents have been busy bringing them to the feeders and water dish.
I haven't seen any baby Jays this year; they have probably nested in the trees next door.
The Ravens have at least two babies near by; they often set up a racket in the trees.
We created a large rock pile between two trees late last summer. I believe that a Mama Chipmunk took up residence either near by or under the rock pile. We have seen her and two tiny babies on and around the rock pile all this Spring. UPDATE - 07/02/04 - two more tiny babies have left the den and are now running about getting food and water - they are so tiny and cute! The previous two babies are growing rapidly! |
