Earthquakes often happen but most of them are very, very samll and they
happen only in some parts of the world.On the next page you see those parts.Do

Sometimes there is a big earthquake.It starts deep inside the earth. There
the earth is very, very hot.The rock is like boiling water!It pushes against
the outside of the earth. The earth shakes. Building fall down and kill
people. Fifty or sixty miles aways, people feel the earthquake. Cups and
glasses break and pictures fall off the wall. People living hunderds of
miles away feel nothing but scientists will be able to measure the earthquakes.
Often earthquakes start fires.This happened inSan Francisco in 1906 and
the earthquake killed 700 people.
Not long ago there was also a big earthquake in China.
