attrition parts of the load rubbing against each other and so becoming smaller and smaller.

corrasion (or abrasion), the wearing away of the river banks by the load carried in the river.

corrosion the chemical action of water dissolving minerals.

cross profile the profile of a river and valley from one side to another, as if the river had been cut in half like a cake.

delta an area of flat land created by a river depositing it�s load when it reaches the sea.

deposition the laying down of material by a river.

estuary a drowned river mouth in a lowland area.

flood when a river overtops it�s banks spreading onto the valley floor.

flood plain the flat, low-lying valley floor alongside a river in it�s lower course.

fluvial process the processes by which a river erodes, transports and deposits.

fluvial landforms feature produced by rivers.eg. a waterfall.

gorge of recession a steep sided narrow valley created by waterfall retreat.

hydraulic power the force of the water eroding river bed the bank.

hydrograph a graph showing how a river responds to different rainfall events

levees high mounds of silt on the river banks, formed by flooding.

long profile the profile of a river from the source to the mouth.

meanders bends in the middle and lower course of a river.

ox-bow lakes semi-circular lakes formed by a river cutting through the neck of a meander.

saltation small particles �leap-frogging� along the river bed carried by the current.

suspension small particles of clay and silt carried along in the river�s flow.

traction boulders rolling along the river bed.

waterfall a vertical drop giving a high head of water along a stretch of river.
