| Assembly line A continuously moving line through a factory carrying a product such as a car. As it moves along parts are added e.g. wheels. This allows mass production and cheaper products. Footloose An industry that can set up almost anywhere where there is good access and a workforce. Globalisation linking up economies around the world through trade and industry. Greenfield site A previously undeveloped site e.g. a green field (farmland) that can be built upon. Heavy industry Industries that produce large heavy products e.g iron & steel, Shipbuilding. Hi-Tech industries Industries that produce products using modern technology e.g. electronics, pharmaceuticals. Industrial estate A purpose built estate of industrial units usually with very good access to a motorway. Light industry Industry that produces small, light, products e.g. componant parts. Multi-national companies Large companies or coorporations that operate in many countries throughout the world. Their Headquarters are usually in MEDC's whilst their factories are in LEDC's using cheaper labour. Newly Industrialising Countries (NIC's) Countries that have recently built lots of factories. e.g. Taiwan. Primary Industry Industries that produce raw materials e.g. mining, farming, fishing, forestry. Production line A product moves through a factory on an assembly line whilst at different point workers of robots add componant parts. e.g. car production. Quaternary industry High tec research based industries e.g electronics, computing or biotechnology. Science parks Areas where high tecnology research companies are located.Usually linked to a university. Usually in pleasant landscaped surroundings. eg. Secondary industry Manufacturing industries that process raw materials into other products.e.g Fish into fish fingers. Includes the construction industry. Tertiary industry Industries that provide a service to other people. e.g. Public services, Doctors, Teachers, Firefighters. Also includes shops,banks, travels agents, hairdressers, footbal clubs. Traditional industries Industries that have been in an area for a very long time usually linked to the resources of that area. e.g coal mining, iron and steel production, cloth making,farming. |
