Geography Awareness Week 2000

November 12 - 18, 2000

Here Today, Here Tomorrow -
            A Geographic Focus on Conservation

Get the TEACHER'S PACKET online this year! A first for National Geographic!

This year's theme is CONSERVATION.  National Geographic has prepared lesson plans in four strands for elementary, middle, and high school students.  The four strands are: Biodiversity, Fresh Water, Population, and Oceans.
National Geographic has set up an opportunity for teachers and students to share their experiences using the Conservation theme materials at their GAW site.  This is a first-time experience for National Geographic, allowing teachers to interact and share experiences.

Additional lesson plans, ideas, resources, and materials are available at National Geographic's Educational Home Site:

Be sure to check out the FANASTIC search for previous articles in National Geographic Society publications, the Virtual Solar System Tour, and Family Xpedition links!  Also of GREAT value are the Lesson Plan links.  The page is laid out very well and is simple to naviagate!

G.I.S. Day - November 16, 2000

Geography Information Sciences, G.I.S., are the electronic tools geographers use to solve problems. Geographers use the layers of data to make maps and other geographic models. Community service organizations, like fire and rescue services, delivery services and even the electric company, use G.I.S. to provide their service.
Use G.I.S. to make a quick map!

Find your community on Arc data!

* note when you connect to Arc data maps, pull down the window at the bottom of the page to choose your map...

Where is? Really neat thematic maps!

And my town's topography's is...

ESRI, one of the co-sponsors of G.I.S. Day provides databases to users on the internet. Visit their site to learn more about geography information systems and GIS day.

What are Geography Information Systems?

There are other G.I.S. sites available on the worldwide web!

National Geography Where-In

Wednesday, November 15, 2000

Please invite all the students, faculty and staff in your school community to wear a "Geography T-shirt" on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2000. A Geography T-shirt is one that has a place on it that can be found on a map, any map. This is an opportunity to be a part of a national celebration of geography and a time to have your students discover their world - community connections.

Please let us know of your participation by sending a card to Mary Alice Aguilar, Delaware Geography Alliance, c/o Department of Geography, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716 and indicate how many students, faculty, and staff in your school participated!

Community Atlas Project

ESRI sponsors a "Community Atlas" project that allows you and a group of students to create either one of two projects.  Students may complete an atlas of their community, creating maps that describe their communities online.  Or students may complete a conservation mapping project.  ESRI offers prizes to YOU and your school for participating!
