The purpose of Television is to entertain and to enlighten.  There are many shows on in any given season that I find entertaining but usually I try to limit how many I will watch.  I know that I can easily become addicted to watching just about anything.  Have you ever turned the TV on because you were bored and found yourself just surfing around, finding nothing on that you want to watch, but by the time you have gotten all the way around you have either forgotten what was on the channels you first surfed or it is now time for new shows to come on and you go around again. This is something that I know could easily eat up a good portion of any given evening so I try to limit myself to turning on the TV to watch a specific show. ( Notice I said I try, not that I always succeed.) This page was last updated in the Summer of 2001.

Tuesday:

Will and Grace/ Darma and Greg These two shows come on at the same time. As often is the case, other than Sports Night, there will be nothing on later that I want to see but two shows I do like will come on at the same time. I don't know if these shows still come on at the same time or not. I have pretty much lost enterest in both of them.

Sports Night This is a show that I at first bypassed because I thought it was going to be about sports.  Once I watched it by mistake I was pleasantly surprised. This is about good ol' interpersonal interaction. I don't know if there is a new trend in TV writing but this show along with a few other new shows has a certain patois in the dialogue that seems more real than shows in the past. (because Aaron Sorkin worked on both this show and the west wing two of the best written shows on TV Sports Night has been canceled so he can focus on the new show The West Wing. I found that this show is now playing in re-run on the Comidy Channel and watch it when I can.

Wednesday:
The West Wing This is by far my current favorite TV show.  Sometimes I dispair of ever seeing American TV that is well written, well acted and has provocative story lines.  But every three or four seasons one of our major networks lets a show with some value slip by their sensors. I believe that it is their goal to cater to the lowest common denominator  amongst the American public. If you have ever seen any of the current lineup of American favorites you would agree. This will never be a favorite amongth the public in general but I hope that enough will watch to keep it on the air more than one season.  The setting is the White House. The President is liberal and his staff vary from liberal to very liberal.  I as an American liberal myself do not an any way object to the setting those of you who are conservative might find the setting to much to allow you to overlook it and see the beauty in the writing and acting. For any of you who have ever wondered, this is what the Clinton white house could have been like if it wasn't for his self destructive acts.

Friday:
Providence this is a nice family drama just a continuation of dramas that have been on TV for years.  They have not broken any new ground but it is good light entertainment. (This show no longer holds my enterest as much as it use to. I still watch it if I catch it but no longer make a point to try to see it.

:
As you can see I left several days completely blank, on these nights there is nothing specific I usually watch.  If I hear or see that something good will be on I will turn the set on but I spend  most of these nights listening to music or reading.  I will  turn the TV on to UMKC's arts channel and read as the videos are playing.  This channel is really great, its like MTV or VH1 for the arts, It has  videos of classical music, opera, ballet and modern dance.
