We must further investigate student-teacher interaction on the net.

It is important to study pedagogical methods that are successful on the net and to encourage teaching as well as research.

Ess' is right when he says of Dreyfus' arguments that "Whatever one's views regarding the value and efficacy of distance learning, Dreyfus' analysis seems to me to require careful attention and discussion - especially if we as teachers aspire to helping our students move to the levels of mastery, expertise, and practical wisdom." (Ess 2002). We need criticism of online pedagogy in order to shape and improve it. I think that research into teaching methods must continue and that offline teachers should get some understanding of online learning even if they do not plan on taking advantage of the new medium.

I agree with Gloria Mark when she says that  "Perhaps we need a new discipline in order to broaden our insight and understanding of our virtual selves. The traditional disciplines of anthropology, biology, psychology, sociology and philosophy can be supplemented by this new discipline. It is becoming known as cybertheory." I might call a sub-category of cybertheory "cyberpedagogy."

Gloria Mark has also pointed out that "Our perception of a virtual world is still mediated through our senses in our physical bodies." (Mark 1997). We are not "disembodied" at all when we interact online. We are embodied in a different way in that our intellect and memory is extended via the computer and the network.  We must learn how to use this extension in the most effective way possible.
