General History
Spelling variations include Smith, Smyth, Smythe, and other ways.
First found in Durham, in present day Northumbria (North- Eastern England) where an olde English version of the name is sited in circa 975, almost a 100 years before the Normans would invade this part of England.
Some of the first settlers in the new world of this name were Captain Smith who settled in Boston Mass. in 1766; Dr. Smith settled in San Francisco Calf. in 1852; Mrs. Smith settled in Virginia in 1624; Aleda Smith settled in New York state in 1880. This is just a few as there were more.
Coat Of Arms
The coat of arms contains a black shield with three silver crosses and a silver chevron engrailed on which there are three red fleurs de lis. The crest is a Heron's head holding a fish.
