Il tema può essere sviluppato come una sorta di follow-up di quello precedente. L’insegnante non ha la pretesa di trattare il topic in maniera esaustiva, ma in base al contesto e agli studenti può essere convenientemente esteso.

·       Pre-requisites

General pre-requisites

-         positive attitude to interactive pair work and group work;

-         knowledge of rules for fair interaction

-         B1level grammar;

Pre-requisites concerning the subject

-         reasonably clear talking and writing about feelings, experiences and opinions;

-         identifying the core of a written text, whose topic, cultural content and basic vocabulary are known;

-         conveniently using the monolingual and bilingual dictionary;

-         understanding audio material (speech, song).

 

 

·       Overall aim: helping and guiding students to reach responsibility and maturity in considering specific problems and dealing with topics and questions within theme “Diversity and Prejudice” using the foreign language.

 

·       Cross – subject aims:

-         learning to reflect on general topics and personal experiences;

-         evaluating relevancy and pertinence of texts within a given field;

-         discover links with others subjects;

-         skimming and scanning reading techniques;

-         summary skill training.

-         obtaining useful information from different sources (magazines, books, internet, etc.) concerning a given field.

 

 

·       Specific aims

-         analysing the following themes: ethnic minorities, racism, homosexuality;

-         discover that knowing different countries, cultures, religion and feelings enriches the human being and that a prejudice is only the result of ignorance.

-         focusing on some aspects of XX century American civilization;

-         focusing on structure and function of narrative and descriptive texts.

 

·       Can do statements:

-         Ss can take notes and summarise;

-         Ss can understand main points of a texts and descriptions of events;

-         Ss can gather informations from different parts of texts in order to fulfil a specific task;

-         Ss can enter into conversation on topics that are familiar (e.g. racism, homosexuality, etc.);

-         Ss can connect phrases in a simple way in order to describe experiences and events;

-         Ss can give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans;

-         Ss can narrate a story or an event and express  their reaction.

 

 

 

·       Linguistic competence :

-         broadening active reading vocabulary;

-         using the Past Simple in past events narration;

-         using the Present Perfect in events description;

-         identifying the main features of narrative and descriptive texts;

Communicative competence: (also includes pragmatic)

-         grasping global and detailed information from an audio or written

     text;

-         simple oral reporting of a written text within the given field;

-         straightforwardly writing short text on subjects within a field of interest, structuring them as linear sequences of points;

-         identifying the main features of narrative and descriptive texts;

 

·       Language activities skills

-         reading with satisfactory degree of independence and adequate level of comprehension narrative texts on subjects related to a specific field of interest;

-         writing a short report within appropriate stress on significant points and relevant supporting details;

-         gathering informations from different parts of texts in order to fulfil a specific task;

-         listening and speaking during goal oriented activities (e.g. brainstorming, guided discussion,…).

 

 

·       Aids

-         photocopies of texts and pictures;

-         Cassette player;

-         OHP;

-         Video cassette player;

-         Slides with pictures of different countries (possibly on Power point);

-         Multimedia lab booking.

 

·       Methodology

All activities have to combine linguistic abilities and an interactive class. An ecleptic approach is recommended, giving more attention to the integrated approach. T. will give preference to the research and discovery procedures, inductive reasoning, single, pair and group work. Students must be guided to develop strategies of reading-comprehension, note-taking, and oral and written summary of texts.

 

 

·       Assessment

The assessment stage will be based on:

-         constant checking and monitoring during class activities;

-         checking homework;

-         intermediate testing through grids at the end of every Unit;

-         final evaluation through grids.

Appropriate grids (“Schede di valutazione”) have to be arranged for testing and evaluation.

 

·       Involved subjects: English, Italian, History, Laws.

 

·       Time: 25 hours
