TIME:  18 H

 

   TEACHING UNITS:

-a) presentation of different types of media: in particular newspapers, Radio and TV (4 h)

-b) the importance of Media in the world (6 h)

 -c) their influence on people’s mind (4 h)

-d) revision dedicated in assessment (4 h)

 

PREREQUISITES

 

GRAMMAR: knowledge of the grammatical structures of the level: present simple, use of different past tenses, prepositions of time and place, future, conditional.

VOCABULARY: knowledge of the words concerning media in general, some newspapers and magazines’ titles.

FUNCTIONS: expressing like/dislike, suggesting, describing things and people, asking and answering questions;

 

OBJECTIVES:

LINGUISTIC AND COMMUNICATIVE:

     -    comprehension and analysis of this theme;

-         -         consolidation of the vocabulary and introduction of new words;

-         -         reinforcement of receptive skills (listening and reading) and productive skills ( writing and speaking);

-         -         capability to read articles and listening news;

-         -         capability to talk about media;

-         -         skimming and scanning of a text;

-         -         analysis of a text;

-         -         capability to give own opinion about the subject.

PEDAGOGICAL AIMS (because these can not be verified):

-         -         cultural and social enrichment;

-         -         understanding how Media influence our thoughts;

-         -         sharing opinion;

-         -         capability to give personal opinion;

-         -         stimulating interests of SS;

-         -         motivating SS.

-         -         enrichment of cultural aspects of  L2;

-         -         knowledge of pros and cons of media;

-         -         capability to talk about everyday life.

-         -         ability to require information on Media;

-         -         ability to take notes and summarize;

-         -         ability to recognize the difference between newspapers and magazines;

-         -         ability to recognize the different kind of programs on TV or on Radio;

-         -         ability to put in relationship the culture of L1 and that of L2.

EXISTENTIAL (savoir-étre):

-         -         open mind towards Media and what they could offer us;

-         -         interest of other different cultures;

-         -         ability to put in relationship own point of view;

-         -         ability to accept other opinions.

COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCES:

Linguistic:

Lexical, phonological, syntactical, semantic; words or expressions referred to language used on TV, newspapers, magazines and Radio;

Socio-linguistic:

Knowledge of the L2 society, culture and life, for example  through the vision of a movie;

Pragmatic:

Functions used to talk about Media; asking and giving information, discussing advantages or disadvantages of TV programs, buying certain types of magazines.

WRITTEN: articles, newspapers and magazines, advertisement, textbook, dictionary;

SPOKEN: interview and TV programs, advertisement.

 

TASKS:

-         -         key-words searching;

-         -         dialogues to simulate interviews;

-         -         writing exercises to simulate articles;

-         -         debating topics to simulate talk show on TV;

-    producing articles;

-         -         giving personal opinion;

-         -         producing summaries and tables;

-         -         skimming and scanning.

 

   STRATEGIES:

RECEPTION:

-         -         inferring information;

-         -         identifying cues of the world referring to Media;

     INTERACTION:

-         -         cooperation among SS with pair and group work;

-         -         discussion and conversations;

-         -         considering other point of view;

     PRODUCTION:

-         -         building on previous knowledge, self-correction;

-         -         making active use of language learnt in real situation;

 

AIDS:

Photocopies, O.H. projector, transparencies, handouts, worksheets, Authentic Materials (newspaper and magazines), blackboard, flashcards, textbook, satellite TV, Radio.

 

ASSESSMENT TOOLS:

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT: at the end of unit

ORAL: conversations and dialogues;

WRITTEN: written exercises and writing articles;

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT: at the end of the module

WRITTEN: - half structured ( composition and summaries, questions with open answers);- not structured (free writing);

ORAL: half structured (pair work and role-play conversation and description), -non-structured (open stimulus and answers, discussions, debates).

 

The assessment is given also by the behaviour of the SS in the class and by their intervention during the lessons , their attention.
