Prerequisites

Grammar: knowledge of the grammar structures graded to the level (present perfect

                 simple, present and past tenses, future forms).

Vocabulary: knowledge of the vocabulary related to interests, food and drinks, prices,

                    general descriptions of people and places.

Functions: asking for and giving information, suggestions and directions;

                  talking about likes and dislikes;

                  talking about yourself;

                  describing places.

Language activities: to distinguish the various kinds of texts;

                                 to scan and to skim a text.

Objectives

Vocabulary: to enrich the vocabulary, with particular reference to verbs and nouns

                    related to travelling.

Functions: to ask for and give precise information, suggestions and directions;

                  talking about likes and dislikes;

                  talking about yourself;

                  describing places.

Language activities: reading comprehension, spoken interaction,written production.

Can do statements: can scan a map;

                               can scan a tourist guidebook in order to locate desired information

                               from different parts of it;

                               can skim a text related to students’ own field of interest with a

                               satisfactory level of comprehension;

                               can deal with most situations likely to arise when making travel

                               arrangements through an agent;

                               can give and obtain more detailed information;

                               can give and ask for detailed directions;

                     can write detailed descriptions on a subject within one’s field of

                     interest.

Pedagogical aims: to improve the knowledge  of places  in  which  English  is used

                               as mother tongue;                                                                                                   

                               to motivate students towards travelling and to make them become  

                               aware of the presence of realities that are different from their own.

Competences involved

General competences

       Ability to learn (savoir apprendre): declarative knowledge; existential competen-

                                                               ce; skills and know-how.

      Declarative knowledge (savoir): knowledge of the world; intercultural awareness;

                                                                    sociocultural knowledge (living conditions, visi-

                                                          ting, interpersonal relations).

      Existential competence (savoir-^etre): ethical and moral values, cognitive styles,

                                                                               motivations, attitudes (new experience,

                                                                    cultural viewpoint, cultural difference),

                                                                    personality factors (enterprise, loquacity...).

      Skills and know-how (savoir-faire): practical skills (social, living, leisure) and

                                                                intercultural skills (culture relations, etc.).

Communicative competences

Linguistic competences: can communicate with reasonable accuracy in familiar

                                        contexts (grammatical competence);

                                        can show a sufficient vocabulary to express themselves on

                                        topics related to their field of interest (lexical competence);

                                        can use a quite clear pronunciation (phonological comp.);

                                        can use the semantic fields related to the topic chosen

                                        (semantic competence).

Pragmatic competences: can express themselves with relative ease;

                                        can exploit a wide range of language flexibly to express

                                        much of what student want;

                                        can link simple elements into a linear sequence of points;

                                        can convey simple information of immediate relevance,

                                        getting across the main points.

Aids: tourist guidebooks, catalogues, brochures, photocopies, blackboard, internet

          sites ( i.e. hostel in Dublin: www.fourcourtshostel.com).

Tasks to be performed: to read texts on subjects  related to students’ interest with a

                               satisfactory level of comprehension;

                              to interact with reference to the topic chosen;

                              to write detailed descriptions and informations on a specific

                              subject within students’ field of interest.                                             

Strategies involved: to identify unfamiliar words from the context related tostudents’

                                  interests;

                                  to exploit any resources available in order to communicate.

Assessment: Units 1-4

                      Role play.

                      Imagine that you work for a tourist office in Great Britain or Ireland.

                      Tell about the beauties of the above mentioned countries to a foreigner

                      who wants to come for an holiday. Suggest him/her where to go, what

                      to do and everything you want.

                      Unit 5.

                      Write a tourist guidebook/catalogue related to the cities dealt with or to

                      other British and Irish places.
