Title: The Internet

 

Addressee: IV year Students of ITC, Level B1/B2.

Teaching units/lessons:

-         The Internet  (1 h)

-         What can you do with the Internet?  (1 h)

-         Searches on the Internet  (3 hs: 1h in the classroom and 2hs in the computer lab)

-         E-commerce  (2 hs: 1h in the classroom and 1h in the computer lab)

-         Writing e-mail messages  (3 hs: 1h in the classroom and 2hs in the computer lab)

-         Technomaniacs and technophobes  (1 h)

-         Are you an Internet addict ? (1 h)

-         Class debate: “The Internet: pros/cons” (2 hs)

 

Prerequisites:

-         knowledge of the grammatical and lexical structures of the level

-         knowledge of the reading strategies: skimming and scanning and text analysis

-         knowledge of different types of letters: formal, informal, business, enquiries, etc.

-         they can read texts on subjects related to their field and interest with a satisfactory level of comprehension

-         they can express their thoughts about abstract or cultural topics

-         they can contribute, account for and sustain their opinions in discussion, provided interlocutors avoid very idiomatic usage and articulate clearly

 

Objectives:

 

Linguistic and communicative objectives:

 

·        comprehension and analysis of texts from a structural and thematic point of view

·        consolidation of vocabulary and acquisition of new language in a contextualized and meaningful way

·        practice and reinforcement of pronunciation

·        reinforcement of receptive skills (Listening; Reading → for the gist/for detail)

·        reinforcement of productive skills (Speaking; Writing)

·        acquisition of contents

·        capability to read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular stances and viewpoints

·        capability to take an active part in discussion in familiar context

·        capability to interact competently on informal social occasions

·        capability to explain a viewpoint on topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options

·        capability to compare and contrast different alternative suggestions or solutions, commenting on the views of others

-         they can make searches in English on the Internet, moving through sites written in English

-         they can write different kinds of e-mail messages (formal and informal messages, enquiries for information about goods or services, etc.)

-         capability of personal reworking and exploitation

General competences:

declarative knowledge (savoir):

·         knowledge of the Internet world and of the opportunities offered by it

·         knowledge of information about different British and American cities, institutions, organisations (from a geographical, demographic, political and economic point of view)

·         knowledge of different services offered by the countries in which the L2 is spoken (holidays, excursions, visits, hotels, sports events, work opportunities, language schools, etc.)

·         knowledge of the existence, in the “target country”, of firms, industries, multinational, corporations, etc. which work in a certain way and offer different services (business administration, industrial management, production operations, selling and marketing, e-commercing, etc.)

·         knowledge and awareness of the similarities and the differences existing between Italy and England or America (relating to all the above items)

·         knowledge of the right behaviour in public performances, such as debates

skills and know-how (savoir-faire):

·         ability to find required information on the Internet, moving through sites written in English

-         guessing meanings and matching words with the right definitions

-         fill in the blanks exercises

-         discussing topics

-         making searches on the Internet

-         writing different e-mail messages

-         answering questionnaires

-         debating topics, giving personal opinion, explaining viewpoint, comparing different alternatives and commenting on the views of others

-         ability to identify and use a variety of strategies for contact with those from other cultures (both oral and written) in different situations

-         co-operation with others in pair or group works

-         identification of words from the context on topic related to the field of interest

-         listening with particular attention to explanations and instructions
