LESSON PLAN.

 

The teacher analyses a passage from the 1st charter of Dracula by Bram Stoker. The teacher will employ activities for the analysis of the text . These activities will  help students to develop the four skills in general : speaking, writing , listening and reading.

OBJECTIVES : analysing and criticizing the characters of a novel and acquiring a satisfactory knowledge of the main themes of this particular genre. Revising Past Tense of regular and irregular verbs, widening vocabulary. Presenting clear , detailed descriptions about this particular field of interest and explaining a viewpoint on a topical issue. Writing a clear ,detailed text  on a wide range of subjects , writing an essay or report giving reasons in support or against a particular point of view.

ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS : The teacher explained some difficult words connected with this theme.

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE : Students know : Past Tenses, Present Perfect , Past Perfect , the 3 types of Conditional the Duration Form. Literature of the previous period: Gothic genre, Romanticism, Historical and Social background of Victorian Period. Moreover they are able to : listen to the teacher, take notes , use synonyms, recognize key words, key concepts, orally report on it (  draw simple conclusions, establish logical links ) .They can narrate a story or relate the plot of a book or a film and describe their reactions. They can write a simple text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.

LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES : Write a report , sum up a text , write a composition, listen to recorded passage and understand the main points. Group work.

AIDS : Textbook , tape recorder.

LEVEL : 5th class of  Liceo Scientifico , Linguistico, Classico sperimentale , Psico-socio pedagogico.  B2  of  CEF.

TIME : 2 hours.

PROCEDURE

PRE-READING ACTIVITY:

The teacher starts with a brain storming . He/ she writes the word "vampire" on the blackboard and asks students to say what they know about it.

At this point the teacher asks students to write a brief  story about vampires. At the end they will have to choose the 3 best stories and they will have to perform them. The class is divided in groups: some of them are the actors and the scriptwriters , the others are the audience who will have to judge the groups. The winners will have a prize prepared by the teacher.

After doing that the teacher starts with the text , on saying that they are going to read a passage from the 1st chapter of the novel "Dracula" . He / she tells the students to listen to the tape recorder and try to understand : 1 How many characters are there ? 2 Are they inside or outside?

WHILE - READING ACTIVITY :

The teacher gives the text to the students and tells them to read and to listen to the tape recorder and then answer the following questions : 1 Where does the scene take place? 2 Who are the two characters ? Who is the sender of the letter that Mr Harker handed to Count Dracula?

The teacher asks students to read the text  again while listening to the tape recorder and then answer the following questions : 1 What does the narrator says about Dracula´s hands and his breath ? 2 Consider Mr Harker and Dracula. What do they learn about their personalities and their physical appearance? 3 What are the key words that reveal Dracula´s real nature ? Underline them.
The teacher asks students to read the passage again and fill in a chart about the differences between the two characters :

The teacher has given students a clear idea about the theme of the texts, the characters, the setting. At this point he/she passes to an analysis of the text from the stylistic point of view :

Read again and say if the text is : 1 narrative ,2 descriptive, 3 argumentative.




POST- READING ACTIVITY :

The teacher passes to a post reading to reinforce the knowledge of the theme of the text and asks students to write a composition about : Count Dracula and Frankestein -  What are the differences and the connections between them ?
