MARTIN GENERATIONS  BY DR. DARIEL DEE MARTIN

The children of  Joseph S. Martin

VI     Joseph S. Martin, the fourth child of Joseph H. Martin and Lucinda Hogan-Martin is the next ancestor we will study.   Joseph S. Martin was born on June 2, 1872 , in Obion County, Tennessee.   Joseph married Mattie Lucinda Halbert on February 9, 1893,  in the Huntington District of Sebastian County, Arkansas.   Mattie Lucinda Halbert (Holbert) was born on December 30, 1876.   Mattie Lucinda Halbert's parents were Marcus H. Halbert and Sarah Adeline Heathcock-Halbert.

Joseph S. Martin and Mattie Lucinda Halbert-Martin started their family in the Mansfield area of Sebastian County, Arkansas.   Later they moved to Blansett, Arkansas, approximately 1900, then on to Keota, Oklahoma, around 1911.  From Keota they moved to Summerfield, Oklahoma, around 1919.  Joseph, Mattie and the remaining children at home made a final move to Orange County, California in 1923.

Joseph S. Martin share-cropped a farm in Summerfield, Oklahoma (over 100 acres) and raised cotton and corn.  Joseph would do all of his own black smithing, i.e. sharpen the plows and shoe the horses.   Joseph was commonly referred to as "Joe" and sometimes "Jack".   He accepted farming as his life's work and he loved to ride horses and hunt deer, fox and racoon with his neighbors and friends (a favorite horse can be remembered as "Grasshopper). The Joseph S. Martin farm had plenty of dogs to help with the hunting and two can be remembered as "Rounder" and "Waltsie".

After moving to Orange County, California, in 1923, Joseph and Mattie settled near the Mission in San Juan Capistrano.  Joseph worked in agriculture and construction with his sons for a time. However, Joseph became ill on August 20, 1925 and died the next day on August 21, 1925 without recovering.   Joseph S. Martin was 53 years old at the time of his death.

Mattie Lucinda Halbert-Martin continued to live and manage the household with her unmarried sons at San Juan Capistrano until approximately 1937.  She then moved to Springfield, Oregon, to join several of the older sons who had previously moved there, established homes and secured steady employment.  Mattie Lucinda Halberd-Martin died in Eugene, Oregon, on April 29, 1957. Mattie was 80 years old at the time of her death.  Joseph S. Martin and Mattie Lucinda-Halbert Martin had 12 children, they are listed below:

[At this point the genealogy brings us to present day generations and your/my own branch of the family.  Each one of you can plug yourselves into this "tree' at this time and complete your own history and branches]. However, at this juncture I will continue with my branch of the Martin Family.

VII    SHAVOR TILLMON MARTIN, the 9th  child of Joseph S. Martin and Mattie Lucinda HalbertMartin is my father.   Shavor was born on November 14,1910, in Blansett, Arkansas.   He married Oma Leona (Lona) Brown on July 6, 1931, in Orange, California.   Lona Brown-Martin was born on January 28, 1915, in Summerfield, Oklahoma.   Lona's parents were William Henry Brown and Minnie Rebecca Hunnicutt-Brown.   The Brown's owned and operated a lumber mill not too far from the Martin's farm.    Shavor is commonly referred to as"Shaf" and as you have seen from the spelling, Oma Leona was referred to as "Lona".

Shavor T. Martin followed the family occupation the majority of his working years.  He was the foreman of a number of large orchard/row crop farms in Southern and Northern California and also worked in that capacity for the Agnew State Hospital, in Agnew, California, and for San Jose State College in San Jose, California.   Approximately 1960,  Shavor and Lona secured a large area of land in the Pasco/Kenniwick area of the Columbia River Basin Project in Western Washington.  Shavor more or less homesteaded this land and literally cleared the sage brush and leveled the land for planting.   He planted alfalfa hay, built a nice home on the property and farmed there for approximately 10 years.   Shavor's son W. J. and his family moved to Pasco and assisted Shavor and Lona during these development/busy times.   Shavor not only harvested the alfalfa hay but purchased a truck and trailer, and trucked his hay to dairy ranches in west central Oregon and Washington.   Shavor became a well known alfalfa farmer in the area.

Shavor and Lona sold the farm in Pasco, Washington,  in the early 1970's and moved back to San Jose, California.   Shavor retired in 1975 and he and Lona decided to moved to Paradise, California.   After a number of years in Paradise, California, they then moved on to Grants Pass, Oregon, where they still have a home.   They made a habit of traveling to Lake Havasu Landing, California, each winter to stay in the warm weather.   Many of their close friends and relatives also, joined them there.   Shavor is still healthy and active at age 88.   Lona Brown-Martin passed away on October 16, 1998,  at the age of 83.
