WILL OF ISAAC DECOW


NEWCASTLE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA (now Delaware); 1687

WHEREAS Jacob Decow, Robert Ashton & Thomas Langhorn have exhibited unto this office a certain will called the last will and Testament of Isaack Decow of Chelsey in ye county of Newcastle.

I, Isack Decow of Chelsey in ye county of New Castle in Pennsylvania, being of good and perfect memory, blessed be God, doe make this will and testament revoking all former wills, in manner and form following:

First, I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth DeCow my daughter my best feather bed and furniture belonging to it with two closes and Sand beds, belonging to them lying in Arminfield in the parrish of Drax, in ye county of York to her and her heirs forever. and I doe give two hundred and fivety acres of land which I bought of Wm Penn to her and her heirs forever.

Item I give unto Rebecca my wife next best feather bed and furniture belonging to it with one silver tumbler with six cushions and fifty pounds of money, provided that she give up her interest of the third part of my personal estate.

Item I give unto Rebecca my wife and to my five children all my linen that is in America equally to be divided amongst them. I give unto Jacob De Cow my son my house and part of land which lyeth in Chelsey with five cows, my part of houses and boat with my nets with Lawrence Dyson and Ellin Wilkison, my mayd servants and Jacob Lamb my boy with second feather bed and two staff beds and my great closet.

Item I give unto John Decow my son all that my land in Skelton in the parrish of Stouldon & county of York to him and his heirs forever and one thousand acres of land which I bought of Wm Penn in America to him and his heirs forever and one feather bed.

Item I give unto Isack my son all that my land in Barlby to him and to his heirs forever and I doe give him one thousand acres of land which I bought of Wm Penn lying in Pennsylvania and to his heirs forever and one feather bed.

Item I give unto Susannah my daughter all that tract of land which I bought of Davison in Sandrax in ye parrish of Drax and County of York and her heirs forever and I do give her one bed tick and I do give her two hundred and fivety acres of land, which I bought of Wm Penn in America and her heirs forever and I do order my daughter to pay unto my wife the sum of fifty pounds within six months, after my death and I order unto her the sum of five pounds in the year during her natural life.

and all the remainder of my goods and chattels, mortgages and indentures bills whatsoever in England and America

I do give unto Jacob DeCow, John DeCow, Isaac DeCow, Elizabeth DeCow, Sysannah DeCow these equally to be divided amongst them viz the goods chattels bills bonds indentures and mortgages aforesaid.

And if it should happen that my wife should be with child at my death I do give it one hundred and fifty pounds to be paid out of my personal estate and I do order Jacob DeCow my Sonn to suffer John DeCow for to enjoy land at Skelton and if he do refuse my will is that he shall pay him hundred pounds sterling.

I do make and appoint Jacob DeCow my brother my sole executor and I do give him five pounds.

and I do appoint my beloved friend Thomas Langhorn of Shamany Creek trustee over Isack my son and John DeCow my son to my brother Robert Ashton and my son Jacob to my brother Jacob and Elizabeth to her mother as long as she shall keep herself a widow, but if she marry I do commit her to G. Langhorn.

I do make these my friends, supervisors and trustees in trust of this my last will and testament revoking all former wills and I do authorize and empower them or those of them my trustees to demand such summs of moneys as they shall see most needful and to pay the same forth for the education of my children and what sum or sum of moneys, my trustees shall pay or cause to be paid for the education or bringing up of my children my will is that it be sufficiently allowed them by my children when they receive their portion and what charges they shall be at about the faithful execution of the trust reposed in them I will that it be allowed and in token of my love to them I leave each of them ten shillings

in witness I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 23rd day of the 11th mo 1686/7

The foregoing will being duly proved in this office and an Inventory of the Estate of Isack DeCow, deceased, likewise exhibited in this office and Jacob DeCow, Robert Ashton, Thomas Langhorn requesting letters of administration, and given security to administer according to Law. Thus and therefore by the King's Authority & in the name of the Proprietary & Governor do authorize and empower Jacob DeCou, Robert Ashton and Thomas Langhorn, them or either of them to administer upon all ye estate lands goods, chattels credits and effects whatsoever belonging to ye sd Isaac DeCou, Deceased, or to him in anny ways appertaining Hereby giving and granting unto ye sd Jacob DeCou, Robert Ashton & Thomas Langhorn or any or either of them full Power & authority to Enter upon or take possession of all ye lands goods chattels and effects whatsoever late belonging or appertaining unto ye sd Isack DeCow and to sue for recover and obtain ye same out of the hands of anny Person or Persons that is owing unto or hath aught in his or her custody of or belonging to ye sd Isack DeCow Deceased and therewith satisfy all his just debts and allow and pay unto the children of the deceased their several legacys and to do and perform all other things as by the will of the deceased is directed & according to the laws of this Government and further to doe execute & perform such other lawful act or acts thing or things about or touching ye premises as fully and amply to all intents & purposes anny other Administrator or Administrators lawfully may can or ought to doe. Done under my hand and seal at Newcastle the 15th day of ye 4th Mot in ye year of ye reign of King James ye 2d & 7th of ye Proprietary Government Anno Dom. 1687.
