of interview with father Thomas Garcia. St. Joseph's Cathedral, Church
Road, Summerville.
Father Tom. "Welcome to St. Joseph's. Now how can I help you? Care for a small brandy?" "Why yes I do remember Yasmina. A lovely girl as I recall. We were good friends at school. Not boyfriend and girlfriend you understand. Even then I had a feeling I would end up doing the Lord's work". "Yes, she often used to confide in me you know. I was a good listener even then - its a necessary qualification in my job of course". "No she never did confide in me as to who the father of her child was. But then, by time she had the child, I was already off starting my training for the priesthood. I was still away when she had that tragic accident. In fact I never even knew she was with child or had given birth until I returned for her funeral. As I recall, that came as a great shock to me". "Do I think it could be one of those two chaps? Well I know she did go out with both of them. My impression was that Dick was a most unsavory customer. He had a reputation as a womaniser. He used to boast that he could have any woman he wanted. We thought it was all hot air. As for Harrison Smith. I do believe that Yasmina really was stuck on him. She was devastated when he dropped her and started going out with Barbara. I seem to recall she came to me most upset. You know it has just come back to me that... well I am loath to admit this but there we were, I was consoling her, one thing led to another, we ....... well, we did something that I should have stopped. But I am human. I left soon after that to start my training and never saw her alive again. Oh my gosh, you don't think? I mean it was only the one time, surely I couldn't be the boy's father!" |
