Animation of mitosis
This is an animation of mitosis to give you an idea of what happens during the division in a generalised animal cell. It may not show exactly what happens in a real cell. Chromosomes are not really coloured as shown.

Points to Note:
  • There is only one cell division producing two daughter cells.
  • The chromosomes do not line up in homologous pairs.
  • There is no swapping (crossing over) of bits of chromosomes between pairs.
  • The two daughter cells have the same number of pairs of chromosomes as the "mother cell".
  • Each daughter cell will have exactly the same genes as the other one.
  • This division occurs in all tissues and is used for growth and repair.
