This is an
animation of mitosis to give you an idea of what happens
during the division in a generalised animal cell. It may not show
exactly what happens in a real cell. Chromosomes are not really
coloured as shown.
Points to Note:
- There is only one
cell division producing two daughter cells.
- The chromosomes do not
line up in homologous pairs.
- There is no swapping (crossing over) of bits of
chromosomes between pairs.
- The two daughter cells have the same number of pairs of chromosomes as the "mother
cell".
- Each daughter cell will have exactly the same genes
as the other one.
- This division occurs in all tissues and is used for
growth and repair.
