Animation of meiosis
This is an animation of meiosis to give you an idea of what happens during the division in a generalised animal cell. It may not show exactly what happens in a real cell.

Points to Note:
  • There are two cell divisions producing four daughter cells.
  • The chromosomes line up in homologous pairs first.
  • There is swapping (crossing over) of bits of chromosomes between pairs.
  • The first division separates homologous pairs.
  • The second division divides chromatids in a similar way to mitosis.
  • The four daughter cells have half the number of pairs of chromosomes found the "mother cell".
  • Each daughter cell will have a different selection of genes than the other three.
  • This division occurs only in reproductive organs and is used to produce gametes.
