The applications procedure works as follows. When an applicant applies officially it is registered, and his/her name will appear above in the applications pending list. The RO assigned to the applicant by the ROC will spend a period of time with the applicant to establish whether s/he would be a welcome addition to the guild. Recommendations of applicants by Calians will be accepted at this time. If it turns out that the applicant is suitable, the Recruitment Officer will register the acceptance of the applicant in the recruiter office for all to see in the above "accepted" list, and mail the applicant telling him/her that s/he has been accepted, and that any Calian may now admit the applicant to Calia by doing the entrance quest with him/her. This facility has been set up to deal with problems of the recruitment officer perhaps not being on at the same times as the applicant. For convenience in dealing with applicants, all Calians may find out which applicants are currently logged in by using the `capp' command. > help calian battle Battle Tactics of the Wolf Pack =============================================== Historically Calian battle tactics co-ordinate two distinct inter-related fighting styles. Those warriors known as swarmers attack from the enemy's flank and rear where the most serious damage can be inflicted, usually impaling the enemy with deft thrusts of spears or other polearms. Often there will be more than one body of swarmers hitting the enemy from opposite sides, a bit like a nutcracker. Those warriors known as maulers fight in the front and centre of the Calian formation, engaging the enemy directly, providing an axis, and keeping the enemy in one place. They usually fight with powerful drives of edged weapons that employ a twist at the end of the motion, ripping open painful gashes and rents which may leave the enemy temporarily in too much pain to fight. All Calians are skilled at an evasive manoeuvre by which they may move behind another body of troops if they are hard-pressed by an enemy attack. This is often employed by a body of swarmers who may be suddenly turned upon by the front line of a desperate enemy. It is also used by maulers who are injured in tight battles. Groups of swarm-only or maul-only warriors have been known to operate quite effectively by improvising each others roles. A lone warrior cannot execute a swarm manoeuvre because there is no one to distract the enemy's attention. A lone mauler is not very effective because there is no-one to threaten the enemy's flank(s), allowing the enemy far more mobility. There are, therefore, two Calian attack specials, known as "swarm" and "maul", and one Calian evasive special, known as "move behind". The total number of combined levels trainable in maul and swarm may not exceed 100; e.g. you may be superior journeyman in both, or superior professional in one and superior layman in the other, or superior guru in one and untrained in the other, etc. Naturally, these attacks may not be executed both at the same time. To train in maul one must have the backing of two Calians who are specialist swarmers, and have been rewarded at least once by the Council for good conduct. A cumulative record is maintained of which swarmers back which maulers, so that the proportion of maulers to swarmers is never allowed to exceed a level which would adversely affect the tactical strength of the Guild as a whole. Swarm ========================================================================= Swarm is a long-range special with an impaling action; hence polearms are most suited to this skill, although appropriate swords may also be used. The swarmer must be in the back line of a team in order for the attack to work, since the aim is to exploit weaknesses in the opponent's guard while they are engaged with the front line team member (tanker). The effectiveness of swarm may be better in certain situations than others. Favourable and unfavourable situations are described below: Favourable: 1) Using a polearm - these are suitable for swarm's long-range impaling action and squeezing through gaps in the opponent's guard. 2) Having another Calian in your team - Calians fight best with other Calians because they have better knowledge of each other's tactics. Unfavourable: 1) A "rogue" tanker - your team is fighting the enemy, but someone outside the team is taking the hits. Such an oaf will make it much harder to coordinate swarm properly. Swarm can be carried out much more frequently than maul, although it is only usable in the back line of a team. In the wolf pack, a swarmer is likened to one of the more dextrous, subtle wolves who attacks the distracted enemy's weak spots. Swarm is a little draining mentally and physically. Maul ========================================================================== Maul is a close-quarters attack which involves using one's weapon in a ripping action; hence swords are most suited to this skill, although appropriate polearms may also be used. The intention of a maul attack is to inflict especially painful wounds on the enemy in the hope of stunning them. Mauls may not be as immediately damaging as swarms but the rents and gashes which they open on the enemy's body will sometimes put them temporarily out of action, especially as combat wears on, leaving them at the mercy of the team. The effectiveness of maul may be better in certain situations than others. Favourable and unfavourable situations are described below: Favourable: 1) The mauler is more effective if s/he is taking the hits, because this automatically places him/her closest to the enemy at the start of the move. 2) Having another Calian in your team - Calians fight best with other Calians because they have better knowledge of each other's tactics. 3) Using a sword - these are suitable for maul's close-quarters ripping action. Unfavourable: 1) Maul may be used solo, but it is at its least effective then. It works best when the opponent is under pressure from a team. In the wolf pack, a mauler is likened to one of the more powerful, aggressive wolves who goes for the throat of the enemy. Maul is a little draining mentally and physically. Move Behind =================================================================== Move behind is an evasion special which allows a Calian to move from the front line of a team to the back line. It is very useful both to swarmers and maulers. A swarmer can put him or herself in a position to swarm, and put a mauler in the best position to maul. Either can escape from an enemy who has proved too dangerous. It is important that the warrior discuss appropriate battle manoeuvres before entering battle, and should never move behind an unwilling team member. A feature of the move behind skill is that the Calian may not be attacked again for a short period after successfully carrying out the manoeuvre. This is a consequence of moving out of harm's way, although in practical terms it is there simply to stop the Calian from being rendered permanently unable to swarm in player conflicts. It should be pointed out that there are two important restrictions on the move behind skill. The first is that, after moving behind successfully, one may not attempt moving behind again for a period longer than the period of protection from attack. This is to ensure that one cannot be "invulnerable". The second is that, after someone has moved behind you successfully, you may not attempt to move behind someone for a period longer than a complete swarm cycle. This is to prevent a tactic known as "spiralling", which is unbalancing and untaxed. Mbsw ========================================================================== Mbsw is the short name for a single manoeuvre that combines move behind and swarm. Quite simply, one attempts to move behind, and if successful, one immediately prepares to swarm. > help calian calian 1---------- Address to the Guild After the Great Battle When all was risked in a final stand, In clash of bloody blades and poles, The monster made by his own hand, Foully crafted from stolen souls, Did meet his end, as did his legions, Some dead, some flung to points obscure, And in our emancipated regions The wounded we heal, the dead inter. By willows round the mountain's crown, The pines and oaks, the white-clad birches, Our fallen comrades we lay down In peace accomplished by their purchase: Our freedom for their lives. What dreams Lie here, among the leaves and vines, What hopes, ambitions, desires, and schemes Are locked eternally in these confines? I tell you - none. Their dreams live still, They stride and strive in us, they soar, Our spirits renew and valor instill To guard in peace what was won in war. Caliana 2---------- The Calian Warrior Guild The Calian Warriors were founded by Caliana in the dark days when warlords ruled the land and Kroug, the mightiest of them all, threatened to enslave the entire population with a devastating combination of military force and malevolent sorcery. After the defeat of Kroug by Caliana's forces, the various villages and city-states banded together in a loose federation and renamed the land Calia. The Federation looked to the Warriors for defense against the rise of another warlord such as Kroug and to combat the remnants of his legions, some of whom can still be found in parts of Calia. However, the many years of war that led up to the final victory had left the various members of the Federation wary of a strong military force, so they decided not to establish a strong central government and to retain their individual militias and armies. The Warriors, who had so long fought against tyranny, also had no desire to become lords over the population. Thus the relationship between the Warriors and the land they served came to be defined simply in their motto: we protect but do not rule. The Warriors are a close-knit community as well as a fighting force. Their numbers are diminished from the days before the Great Battle, when so many of them fell, but even at their peak they were more of a band of brothers and sisters than an army of superiors and subordinates. Caliana shunned the typical trappings of rank in favor of bestowing honorary titles upon those who had proved their worth either in battle or in other ways that benefitted the Guild. The camaraderie that has developed among the Warriors has maintained their morale even in the bleakest circumstances, and many credit their devotion and loyalty to each other as the key factor in their defeat of the much larger army of Kroug. > help calian caliana Of Caliana ---------- Caliana has been a great leader in Calia, both in war and in peace. A highly innovative battle tactician and a powerful wizard, she forged a united country from the war-ravaged regions of pre-Calia, and created a state of freedom in those lands, where near-slavery and oppression had ruled before. All good folk in the land of Calia revere here greatly as their saviour, and the remnants of her enemies are ever in fear of her powers. This is her tale. She was born into a poor peasant family that lived in a tiny village by the sea in the mid-western regions of pre-Calia. Despite the harsh rule of their Warlord, they managed, by working very hard on their farm, to get by, and found some happiness in life despite the oppressive conditions. However, what happiness they had came to an abrupt end when their village was looted and burned to the ground by an enemy Warlord's army. Caliana's parents both died trying to defend their home, leaving her an orphan and a refugee at the age of twelve. Seeing that she may well have died if left to fend for herself, one of the raiders took pity on her, and she was taken as a captive to the castle of the Warlord Thor, where she was put to work as a servant girl. The loss of her parents coupled with the years of captive drudgery that followed made her a very grim girl, but in those years she grew to be tall, strong and athletic, the build of a warrior. She showed more than just the physical qualities, though, as one of Thor's soldiers found to his cost when he tried to take advantage of her. When word of the death of this soldier, one of the hardier ones in Thor's army, came to his ears, Thor decided that rather than punish Caliana he would have her trained and fight in the soldier's place, as she evidently had the ability. Caliana, although hating Thor and his army above all others, saw that the only chance of a half decent future for herself lay as a fighter. All who were not fighters in the warring lands of pre-Calia were helpless victims, as she had found many years before. Therefore, she responded to Thor's offer by saying that she would fight for him, but not as one of his soldiers. Rather, as a mercenary, a free agent with no direct loyalty to him, only to herself. She also refused to take part in any raids on villages of enemy Warlords; only on the battle field against rival Warlord's soldiers would she fight. Thor nearly laughed in her face at her demands, but he saw that she was serious and proud, and being a respecter such qualities, he granted her wishes. Over the next few years Caliana fought in many battles and learned to be a master of weapons, particularly of swords and polearms. She also learned of battle tactics, and came to the conclusion that all the events on the battlefield that she witnessed smacked of recklessness and poor planning, and little or no teamwork among the troops. She had her own ideas about how these things could be improved, but kept these to herself.. mostly. For among her fellow soldiers she had come to realise that there were some who thought alike in many ways, and who she would confide in. They shared a longing for peace and a stable land where people would not be ruled by constant fear, and for an end to the violence. They also shared hatred for power mongers such as Thor, who ruled by oppression and sought only to further their own power at all costs. Two of her fellow soldiers, Krom and Marrock, she became particularly close friends with. They planned to recruit those who could be trusted of Thor's warriors into a small but powerful army under Caliana's command, which she would then lead away to found a free community in the north. Steadily their circle widened until it included almost a quarter of Thor's men. However, although they kept their dissent to themselves, there was a traitor amongst them, and word came to Thor of what was afoot. Thor was so alarmed that he ordered the immediate capture and execution of Caliana. His command was unsuccessful, however, as she was fortunate to be in the company of many of her closer followers. Utter mayhem ensued. A confusing battle was fought in the corridors of the castle as the cries and curses of treachery flew and loyalties were tested to the limit. Already though, the sense of coordinated battle tactics and teamwork that Caliana had spread among her followers was more than a match for the superior numbers of her more reckless and loosely bound enemies, who were also bewildered and unprepared for such a situation. Caliana and her followers secured control over the courtyard, took possession of the horses they needed and escaped from the castle grounds. Caliana led them many leagues away to the ruins of the very seaside village that had once been her home. There they made a camp and made plans for their defence should Thor persue them. They need not have feared this for the time being, however, as he and his remaining troops would still be in a state of shock and disorder for some time to come. The first of the Calians, as they came to be known, were now given an opportunity to train properly in the style of fighting that Caliana had been formulating for many years. She tought her followers the new tactics that are now known to many as "swarm" and "move behind", a devastating combination of attacking and defensive maneuvers that relied upon -- More -- 80/154 -- ( t b r n a q x ! h ?) -- coordination of team members, timing, self discipline and awareness for one's comrades in arms well being. The Calians trained hard at these skills for a great deal of time to achieve true mastery, and it was not long after they achieved mastery that they were forced to test their effectiveness. For Hucker, the warlord who still ruled over the region that the Calians had set up camp in, had learned of this petulant intrusion of fighting folk into his territory, and wanted to immediately put an end to what seemed like a challenge to his power. Hucker sent a sizeable army from his castle to attack their camp.. and received back a well beaten, disheartened and considerably reduced force. He stared in bewilderment as what was left of his task force limped and trudged back through his gates. His soldiers had simply been no match for Caliana's, either in terms of tactics or skill. Hucker's men had also tasted for the first time the fighting spirit that comes with the defence of one's new found freedom. This was only the first of many times that the Calians had to defend their small and new found niche of free land, yet each time they defended it successfully, no matter who the attacker. Their numbers grew as other folk from the nearest regions joined them. Many of them were from the local peasanthood, who saw at last a chance to live under something other than tyrannical leadership, but there were also many soldiers joining the Calians from the armies of the Warlords of nearby regions. These fighting folk were unhappy with their Warlord's exploitation of the peasanthood, even if their own existences had been considerably more comfortable. So, the community swelled, and where the temporary camp had been, a town was built, a then modestly sized cluster of humble housing with one or two shops. They named it Gelan. A great morale and sense of comradery grew in the community, with the greatest esteem falling on the Calian Warriors who defended the town, under Caliana's wise leadership. It was not long, however, before a new threat arose in pre-Calia. Word of great fear came to Gelan that a warlord from a far region, Kroug, was steadily conquering and unifying the lands in the south under his leadership. Already his army had grown to immense size and he held many castles under his control. What was most disturbing was that his soldiers were said to fight with an incredible ferocity that derived from their fanatical worship of Kroug. Yet this seemed strange that he could inspire such fanaticism when he epitomised the worst aspects of cruel tyranny that any Warlord had ever displayed. Furthermore it was said that Kroug was a great sorcerer whose legends under the title "dark traveller" had reached many far lands. Although Kroug was as yet a great distance away, Caliana realised that this posed by far the biggest threat yet to her expanding free community. She was gripped with fear that the lands around would enter their darkest age of all time. Her people badly needed a base that was more defensible than Gelan in its current embryonic state. It was then that she felt one night a calling from afar in her dreams, and she saw a vision of Mount Kyrus, the grim grey mountain that lay many leagues to the southeast. That mist-enshrouded mountain had long been a place that the peasanthood were greatly superstitious about. Not many ventured anywhere near it as it was said that spirits from some ancient civilisation haunted the land around it. Yet she felt drawn to it by powerful forces. Restless, she saddled her horse and rode that night for many hours to the foot of Mount Kyrus. A great quiet was all around as she dismounted. Now she could hear the voices for real, and wondered whether she was halucinating. She trod her way cautiously up the ancient path that encircled the mountain, and as she neared the top, great ghostly hands shaped from the mist about the mountain beckoned to her. On the plateau at the peak, strangely smooth, she saw ahead of her ancient ruins of a palace that crowned the mountain. She had heard about them in tales her mother once told her, but had not believed that they really existed. Then voices whispered to her, telling her of the ancient and enlightened civilisation that had once had its hub here many thousands of years ago, how the barbarian hoards had destroyed it and how the lands all around had suffered ever since. The voices named her as a chosen one to rekindle a new age of enlightenment and freedom that might hold until the next passing into a dark age. A great feeling of magic surrounded her as the ancient spirits offered her the power to match Kroug's magic if she would be prepared to take on the burden of being the chosen one. Caliana, after a brief hesitation, nodded. Then she felt the ancient power flow into her, and in front of her, she saw an amazing sight. A magnificent crystalline palace was rising like a ghost from the ruins, to crown the mountain once again.
