To train offensive skills such as sword, polearm, unarmed combat etc. you will have to choose a primary and secondary offensive skill. You will be able to train your primary offensive skill to superior journeyman and your secondary offensive skill to confident journeyman, while other offensive skills will be limited to superior layman. This does not affect what you may train at other guilds you are a member of. The guild also offers a special attack ability called "donk" which grows in effectiveness as your skills and stats increase. > help cadet alignment Alignment ========= This guild is neutral, even though the town of Gelan is good aligned (the town is allied to the Calian warriors, although it is politically independent). The school of Gelan teaches ethics as one of many other courses. Anyone wishing to become a guard or member of the territorial army would have to take that course and prove themselves to not be in opposition to the moral code of the town, as well as graduate from the cadets. But the cadet guild does not teach any moral values or political system, just some basic rules. > help cadet commands Cadet emotes: ------------- cbite, cborn, cburp, cfist, chand, cimit, cjump, clisten, cobserve, cno, cplan, cpresent, cpush, cready, csalute, cscrut, csidle, cstand, cstudy, cyawn, cyes Don't ask me "What do they do?!" Use your initiative, cadet! Cadet commands: --------------- cleave cadets - for leaving the guild, anywhere. clist - list cadets in the game. donk [left/right/both] - for fights. cbrawl - start combat with a cadet. Combat starts after both of you use the command. NEVER use a "kill" or "assist" on a cadet. Note that killing a cadet during a cbrawl will result in expulsion. cduel - similar to cbrawl except that a duelist can kill his/her opponent without being expelled. ckill - exactly like the "kill" command except that it won't work if your target specification applies to two or more livings who look different to you. Useful to help avoid mistakenly attacking players. Cadet Frequently Asked Question: -------------------------------- Q: "Where's your crossbow?" A: "We don't need a crossbow. We've got a donk." It's a sign that the town's moderate politics has encouraged diversity and resourcefulness. If you've met the likes of Coiney and Raspatoon, you'll be aware that the mayor is a tolerant man. The iron rule that spanned most of the land over recent centuries has been reformed a lot in this region. The level of trade, particularly sea trade, has risen, strengthening the economy and filling the benevolent coffers of the chancellor despite Coiney's startled protests. Gelan is quite a broad-minded town, but the military are still very influential, partly in view of the threat from the armies of the south, and also because some of the mayor's advisors believe that further economic and social freedom will lead to widespread egotism and self-indulgence. However most of the townspeople are busy folk who keep their feet firmly on the ground. As the saying goes, a swagger in the step is a sure way to stumble. Under the pressure of conflict, if two sides are equally matched, the one that better knows its own abilities is the more likely victor." - Xorfin > help cadet graduate Graduates ========= Killing Restrictions -------------------- If you kill a cadet, guard of Gelan or citizen of Gelan after initiating combat against him/her and s/he had not previously initiated combat against you or a cadet, guard or citizen of Gelan during his/her current login, there is a mandatory punishment. The punishment for each of the first three offenses is suspension of your graduate status, starting with a period of six weeks for the first kill, rising in increments of 6 weeks up to the third, eighteen weeks. These are cumulative if you commit more offenses while suspended. On the fourth kill, you lose your ring permanently. An attack without a kill isn't currently punishable. There are no restrictions or penalties for a graduate killing a graduate - such fights are considered outside the influence of the guild. Commands -------- cduel - challenge a cadet or graduate to a duel. If a cadet agrees to duel you, there will be no penalty if you kill him/her. Duelling a graduate is just an emote because there are no penalties for killing one in any case. creputation - list cadet reputations. more to come.. > help cadet graduation Graduation ========== To graduate you must leave the guild with the title of Learned. Your title is calculated from a range of factors. The first of these is the skill level that you have attained for each skill that you can train here (except for offensive skills that you did not select as primary or secondary). The second is your experience as a cadet i.e. how much progress you have made since you joined. The third is your contribution to the armoury. It is possible to graduate without making armoury contributions if you are a very experienced member of the guild. It is also possible to graduate if you join the guild late and cannot gain much experience before you have to leave, but you will have to compensate for the lack of experience with a relatively large contribution to the armoury. On graduating you will receive the award of a golden star ring, which is a permanent memento. You will also have access to guild's rooms, although you will no longer be awarded points for armoury contributions. > help cadet history History ======= The town of Gelan is in a state of military alertness due to the threat posed by the sorcerer Kroug, and to a lesser extent brigands. The mayor recently ordered that the youths of the town be given basic military training at the end of their studies in the school of Gelan to provide a strong basis for the local Territorial Army (part-time reserves), Guards of Gelan (occupational) and conscription, in the event of all-out war. Youths from foreign lands were also offered the chance to benefit from the training in order to strengthen diplomatic links. The Cadets of Gelan is the name for the organisation created within the school to carry out this training. Among the abilities targeted for improvement are general fighting skills, self discipline, teamwork and resilience. A veteran from the last great battles, Xorfin, was appointed as leader and instructor. There are no plans to make guilds based on the territorial army or guards. > help cadet joining Joining and Re-joining ====================== Anyone below the level of veteran may join, provided they aren't a member of a layman or occupational guild and they haven't previously been a cadet more than once. If you want to re-join after being booted out or leaving once, you may do so as long as you are still below the level of veteran, but you will have to pay a penalty of thirty levels of combat skills. The levels will be automatically removed on your re-joining. However, if you were expelled for killing a fellow cadet and s/he s you in the training room, you may re-join for a smaller penalty of fifteen levels of combat skills. > help cadet leaving Leaving ======= There are no penalties for leaving although, as already mentioned, there are if you want to re-join later. Note that there is a global feature called skill decay that means if you train your skills higher than the levels offered in adventurer guilds, they will decay unless you are in a guild that offers training up to your current levels. So, keep this in mind when you train your skills, because when you leave the cadets some of your skills may decay unless you join another guild that supports them. Leaving is easy though and can be done anywhere in the game. Cadets who grow to veteran or above are removed from the guild, since they have outgrown the cadet system. Those who have reached the title of Learned by the time they leave will be rewarded with a golden star ring as a memento, whether they leave by choice or from outgrowing the guild. > help cadet protection Protection ========== As cadets are students without much experience in the field, they are not expected to put their lives at risk by entering combat to protect the locals of the town, such as Xorfin, guards or citizens. The guards carry out the task of protecting the town's citizens, which includes all of the shopkeepers. Xorfin, in addition to his role as teacher, guards the cadet guild, and having extensive experience and success in combat, prefers that the other guards dedicate themselves to protecting the rest of the town. > help cadet reputation Reputation ========== Cadets who have accumulated a lot of experience in the guild, continued to make major armoury contributions and built up good skills are considered "dedicated". Although your level of experience, armoury contributions and skills are also important in deciding whether you have the title "Learned", dedicated status is harder to attain as it requires very good levels in all three, i.e. it would not be enough to have a weakness in one counterbalanced by an extremely high level in another. Dedicated cadets may give their opinions to Xorfin about the reputation of fellow guild members or graduates, which he then takes into consideration in deciding their "official" guild reputation, which has certain effects on guild policy (see later). If you express a "positive" opinion of a player it implies that you think s/he conducts him/herself in a way that upholds and enhances the image of the guild and raises morale, whereas "negative" implies that if the player's behaviour were allowed to continue it could tarnish the guild's image and lower morale. In order to encourage the reliability of the system, the dedicated group has to be of reasonable size and the magnitude of the sum of positive (+1) and negative (-1) opinions has to be a significant proportion of the group in order to influence Xorfin one way or the other. For instance, if, on balance, a cadet's reputation is considered positive by a significant number of dedicated cadets, s/he will receive a special title prefix of "Esteemed", whereas if a cadet's reputation is significantly negative, s/he will be considered unworthy to be associated with the guild, so attacking and killing him/her will not incur a punishment, and his/her rack points will be capped, making graduation harder. A graduate with a bad reputation may not enter guild rooms and may be killed without penalty. In the training room, dedicated cadets may use the command: copinion is to make their opinion of a player's reputation known, or just copinion to list the opinions they currently have registered. If you lose your dedicated status due to changing levels of skills or armoury contributions, your opinions will cease to be taken into consideration, but they will be saved in case you manage to regain it, in which case they will be reintroduced into the totals. Cadets are all considered of equal importance as student fighters by Gelan and the guild's drill Sergeant Xorfin, but some cadets, through their efforts and contributions, are believed to deserve a special voice in guild matters. Dedicated status is not officially publicised to all guild members as a title or list because as far as Xorfin is concerned it is a matter between him and the cadets in question. However a forum for discussions among the dedicated group may be set up at some point to make it easier to reach a consensus, and obviously there is nothing to stop anyone making their status known. All cadets and graduates may use the command creputation to list reputations. Note that a cadet who starts a login with a certain reputation will retain its effects until they log out, even if their reputation changes while they are logged in. > help cadet rules Rules ===== All cadets are expected to consider carefully when and when not to use the "kill" and "assist" commands. This is the central rule of the guild. Only in the following circumstances may a cadet attack a fellow cadet: - the combat was started by both cadets using the or commands or - the attacked cadet was punished for attacking a fellow cadet during his/her current login (this allows other cadets to assist in fighting off an aggressor without being punished). The penalty for attacking outside these circumstances is to lose the ability to donk for a few days. This is cumulative, i.e. further illegal attacks will increase the ban. A donk ban may be reduced if the victim forgives the aggressor in the training room (use the command "cforgive"). Only in the following circumstances may a cadet kill a fellow cadet: - the combat was started by both cadets using the command (_not_ the cbrawl command) or - the attacked cadet was punished for attacking a fellow cadet during his/her current login. The penalty for killing a fellow cadet outside these circumstances is expulsion from the guild. If the killer wishes to re-join and is able, the resulting skill penalty may be reduced if the victim forgives the killer in the training room (use the command "cforgive"). An attack on a citizen or guard of Gelan who did not attack the cadet first will be punished in the same way as an attack on a fellow cadet. Killing a citizen or guard of Gelan who did not attack the cadet first will be punished in the same way as killing a fellow cadet. > help cadet welcome Welcome ======= "Well, this has got to be the softest bunch of novices I've ever laid eyes on. You lot couldn't arm-wrestle pixies! Where are you from lass? Sparkle? To my knowledge only two things come out of Sparkle, hairy rats and frightened mice. Now you don't look tough enough to be a hairy rat, so what does that make you? I beg your pardon? Insubordination, eh. The penalty for contradicting a drill sergeant is fifty pushups. Go! One, two, three... ... is that all?! My word, training you lot is going to be harder than I thought. Back in my day we had to be REAL warriors! We camped using rocks for pillows, survived on broccoli, water and dried beef and made do with only our trusty donk in battle. Not like the fighters of today, sleeping on soft beds, fed on rich food and beer and showing off with fancy combat maneuvers like sting, dartboard and entrail, or whatever they call them. Now's not the time for high living or glory, cadets, but time to find out what you're really made of!" - Xorfin >
