Tears of Christ

As You looked down on Your children
You must have shed a tear
For all You are, You are still human
Yet we fear to linger near
Did You ever wish You could touch us
As a mother to her child?
Did You ever want us to hold You close
As You cried the tears of Christ?

We will never know, what it is like
To be someone like You
And even though we may be the chosen few
We can never cry the tears of Christ

You lived Your life among us, yet we rejected You
You lived as one of us, but we never understood
You had human blood in Your veins, saline in Your tears
You laughed in our happiness, You knew our every fear
But how many of us understood who You were?
When You wanted to cry, how many offered a shoulder?
How many of us held out a hand when You wanted to hold on for dear life?
How many of us washed away the tears of Christ?

We have never seen the tears of Christ
For our tears have blinded our own eyes
And now, in the darkness, when we have nowhere else to go
You are always there, ready to lead us home
You hold our hand, You lift us up
You lead us past the lonely cross
And in the darkness, we do not see the shine
The shine of the tears of Christ

And when they strung You up to die
Was it just the sweat in Your eyes?
Was it only blood and water that poured out of Your side
Or were there tears behind Your closed eyes?
Raised from death, now there are no more tears
Ascended to heaven, we have nothing to fear
You're coming again, You'll always be near -

Yet alone I wonder, will I see what is mine
Will I ever see the tears of Christ?

In the darkness I have finally discovered light.
