Joseph Manuel Mangum

(1829 - 1861)

Joseph was born Apr. 30, 1829 in the Newlight Township of northern Wake County. Not much is known of Joseph's early life.

Joseph was a teacher in Wake County. It is believed that he got this job with the help of his brother-in-law Clinton M. Rogers, who was a wealthy merchant and local Justice of the Peace. Estate papers in 1850 suggest Clinton and Joseph were business partners, but were not very successful.

On Oct. 24, 1850, Joseph married Clinton's sister, Frances Emily Rogers, daughter of Peleg S. and Clara (Fort) Rogers.

Joseph and Frances had 5 girls, Ellanora Josephine(1851 - 1931), Claudia F. (1853 - 1854), Adella Eugina (1854 - 1911), Mary (Mollie) Valona (1860 - 1896) and Sarah (Sallie) Susan 1859 - 1935). Claudia died in infancy and Adella never married.

Joseph was the co-executor of his father's estate, along with his brother-in-law, Duncan S. Cannady. Both men died before the will was fully executed.

Joseph and Frances both died in the winter of 1860/61, Possibly from an Influenza outbreak. Frances died Dec. 22, 1860 and Joseph on Feb. 22, 1861. Both are buried in the Rogers Family Cemetery about 3 miles from the James Mangum House.
