For large, technified plantations, the more manageable and more pressing issues are not habitat conservation (‘green’ issues) but rather chemical use and its impact on water and soil quality and worker health (‘brown’ issues). The Rainforest Alliance, for example, is applying brown criteria to large corporate coffee, banana, and citrus plantations.
