| Frankenstein
Frankenstein: Through the eyes of the Monster is a point and click Myst-like game but with darker and much more mature tones. You take the role of Philip Werren, a man charged with the murder of his daugther, a crime he did not commit. For this 'crime' he is hung and is left for a time until he is took down and transprted to a mysterious place of wonder...and horror. Story You awake to find yourself in a dark castle, and looming over you is a man you know, a man who brought you back from the dead, a man whom is Victor Frankenstein. He delights in his power and accomplishment, you, however, sulk in the depths of hell wanting life to end and wondering why you came back. You explore the castle searching for anything of intrest that can shed light in the darkness and any soul that may be willing to help. You find what you are seeking...your daughter. She must be saved and you must eacape this eerie place and find a new life. You must be wary, for the Doctor is watching and even he and his loyal minions may be the end of you if you are not careful. Universe Taking place in a rich and detailed universe that is not unlike our own, Frankenstein is a modern marvel. Using rich enviroments and high quality sound you can't help but turn off the light. In truth, the game was made to run in a dark enviroment to give the feel of horror. The game takes place in the late 1800's and you actually feel like you are there. Most of the time you feel alone but is being watched by someone lurking the the shadows. Unlike Myst you are not alone in the world and you can be killed...several times if you are not careful. Your comrades can also be killed so you must make wise decisions. The message of this game is that you can mess with life itself and get away with it, unlike the message Shelleys novel delivers. The world the game is in comes across as being very believable, almost as if you could actually be there. Graphics The games graphics are well done for a photo-book-like game and the Quicktime movies blend in well with the background and foreground. I kind of wish that the game designers went ahead and made the game more like RealMyst, with moving clouds and such. I think the red sky around the castle would look much more creepy if it were to look more realistic. I can't complain though as the game and it's graphics are fine as it is. Sound The sound is crisp. From the yelling of a enraged Victor to the moaning of dead animals that have been skinned alive, all of the sound comes off as believable. Acting The acting is nothing to laugh at as Tim Curry does a marvelous job and is the best actor in the game, hands down. Other less experianced actors did not do too hot but that's why they are 'inexperianced'. Game Difficulty The game is far more difficult than the original Myst and as such you may be biting your nails or ripping your hair out half-way through the game, when it actually gets hard. I recommend you get the official guide with the game as the two fit together perfectly and you can get just enough information to get past a hard spot without ruining the rest of the game. |
