Fabricating and Installing Firewall Pad

The restoration companies wanted almost $100 for an original firewall pad and fasteners. It's just a piece of cardboard and some insulation to keep heat and noise out of the passenger compartment!

I drew a pattern, and cut one out of bulk automotive insulation for $40, including fasteners. It's going to be under the dash anyway. When was the last time you got into someone's car and thought, "That's a really nice firewall pad."?

I made the template out of grocery bags. Just take your time and tape them to the inside of the firewall. Then, I traced the outline with a pencil and cut away the areas I did't need. I located the steering column cut out, heater motor cut out and all of the fastener holes.

I punched out the fastner holes with a hammer and spent 9mm casing. The rest, I just cut out with utility scissors.

Finally, I painted the side that would show flat black with some cheap spray paint.

No, I didn't loose all my hair working on this project, but as you can see, it has taken it's toll.
I think it turned out really nice. The fuzzy white holes on the right side of the picture are mounting holes for the heater assembly.
