I spent just $100 to get the final touches back on the engine. I bought new spark plugs, wires, radiator and heater hoses, and jerry-rigged the engine so it would run without a radiator. Basically, I turned the engine into a closed loop system. I filled the engine with water, and kept a close eye on the mechanical temperature gauge I had installed. I bolted on my freshly rebuilt Carb, and primed the system with a marine fuel hose and my gas can for the lawnmower.
The engine fired up on the first try. It really sounds mean with the open headers and no exhaust. I'm the scourge of the neighborhood.

Check out the big picture. Note the closed circuit radiator hose, marine fuel hose on the cowl, and the lawnmower gas can. The headers cleaned up great!
The engine is a 1957 283ci Small Block Chevy. It was bored .030" over when it was rebuilt sometime in the mid 60's. Other than cleaning up the engine, striping the blue metallic paint off and repainting it, I haven't done much. I'll focus on upgrades later. |

Here's the 600 CFM Holley 5160 I rebuilt. I got a Holley "Trick Kit" rebuild kit and S-A Design "Holley Rebuilding & Modifying" book. It just takes time. |
