18. Joseph E. DYE was born on 21 Dec 1844 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.6,20 He served in the military on 2 Jul 1861 in Capt. W.L. Fletcher's Company G, 4th Florida Infantry, CSA.21 Captured on December 16, 1864 and was a prisoner of war until released on May 15, 1865. He was held at Camp Chase, Ohio until release. He died on 11 Oct 1903 in Cypress, Alabama.21 Pension claim says,"Found dead near ? state of Alabama"
From the Tampa Tribune of Oct. 30, 1903:
"DYE KILLED BY A TRAIN"
"St. Petersburg Man Meets Death in Alabama"
"St. Petersburg, Oct. 29.--Information has reached here of the killing of J.E. Dye, a well-known resident of this county, by a railroad train near Cypress, Ala., Sunday, October 11.
Mr. Dye was either walking on the track or had taken a seat on it and had gone to sleep when the train struck him. The body was terribly mangled.
The deceased leaves a wife and several children in this county, among them being Mrs. Lula Brantley, of this city.
Mr. Dye left Hillsborough County in May to visit a sister at Denver, Col. He started on the return trip home August 1 and, while in Memphis, was badly beaten and robbed of $148. so serious were his injuries that he remained in an unconscious condition for several hours. From Memphis, Mr. Dye worked his way to Birmingham, and was later heard from at Moundsville, Ala. It is thought that he was walking from Moundsville to Cypress when he was killed. The remains were temporarily interred near Cypress, but will be brought to St. Petersburg later.
Mr. Dye was 60 years of age. He was a Confederate veteran, and was successful as a truck-farmer. He was prominent in religious circles, and a licensed minister of the gospel, though assigned to no regular charge. Besides his relatives here, the deceased leaves three sisters and a brother in Jacksonville and a sister at Denver, Col."
