Sixth Generation

42. James David REDDING49 was born in 1825 in Thomas County Georgia.50 He served in the military on 14 Nov 1862 in Groomville, Georgia.51 He died on 6 Oct 1863 in Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana.52 James volunteered in Thomas County Georgia, Company F, 29th GA Inf. as a private. He was captured near Jackson Mississippi by Union forces of the Expeditionary Army, Jackson, Mississippi in July, 1863 and sent to Snyder's Bluff, Mississippi on 30 Jul 1863.

He was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN.53 After his capture July, 1863, James David Redding was sent to Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana on August 7, 1863. He had been shot in the leg and it was most likely amputated. In a hand written letter to a relative, his widow stated that he died from ill treatment and lack of care from the enemy, however, we do not know the cause of death.

He died just before the Register of Deaths List, that offered the most information, was started. On December 22, 1863 an official list was begun that listed cause of death and the grave number.

Sadly, even those grave numbers can no longer be identified. In the early part of the 20th century, a movement began to have all burials in Greenlawn cemetary reinterred to Crown Hlll Cemetary. The Confederate graves, as well as many others, could no longer be identified. The wooden markers had faded and crumbled away years earlier. The Confederate soldiers were reinterred in what is now known as the Confederate Mound at Crown Hill. The large monument that held all of their names had already been moved to Garfield Park on the south side of Indianapolis to prevent further damage to it from pollution. Indianapolis once had a very bad pollution problem in the earlier half of the century.

Recently new plaques were placed at the mound listing all the men buried there. James David REDDING and Nancy Caroline ENGLISH were married in 1850 in Thomasville, Thomas County, Georgia.53
