Old saying: "To have a friend, show yourself friendly."

TRUE FRIENDSHIP HAS THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS:

KINDRED SPIRIT -- (verse 20) "I have no one else with the same soul/mind."

1 Samuel 18:1; 20:17 -- "Jonathan became one in spirit with David."

GENUINE CONCERN FOR OTHERS -- (verse 20-21)
SERVANT'S HEART -- (verses 22-24)
FOCUS ON ETERNAL THINGS -- (what matters ultimately) (verse 21-22)

on the interests of Jesus Christ and the work of the gospel

DEPENDABLE, FAITHFUL -- (verses 25-27) partner, sure
TAKE RISKS FOR YOU -- (verses 26-27, 30)

Epaphroditus could have been condemned because of his association with a capital prisoner.
Epaphroditus probably had caught the infamous malaria of Rome. The Mamertime Prison was in a low-lying area.
Risk -- parabolani "to hazard one's life"-- In the early Church, a Christian society arose which ministered to the sick, buried martyrs and enemies. The Gamblers. Faith is spelled R-I-S-K.

PLEASANT TO BE WITH -- (verses 28-29)

Bring joy, honorable

COMMITTED TO CHRIST -- (verse 30)

Mind of Christ was the mind of Timothy and Epaphroditus
