Chipman

OWEN CHIPMAN

1. OWEN CHIPMAN Chipman was born in the 1830s and lived in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland as a fisherman. He could have came to Newfoundland from England, but it’s more likely he was born in Spaniard’s Bay. There are a number of Chipmans in Spaniard’s Bay during the 1800s and they quite possibly could be related to him. He was a member of the Church of England and was married to CATHERINE. He died sometime between 1894 and 1898. Owen and Catherine had nine children. They are listed in order of birth.

Smith in the presence of Mark Gosse and Mary Jane Jewer performed their ceremony. Nathaniel was a fisherman and Pricilla was a spinster. By 1899, Nathaniel had changed professions to a planter. His wife was born in October of 1858 in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland and died in 1934. Nathaniel died in 1923 and he is buried next to Pricilla in the Holy Redeemer Anglican Cemetery in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland.

3. LEVI CHIPMAN3 (OWEN1)
Levi Chipman was born in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland in September of 1882. When he was 23, he married Elizabeth Julia Jewer (see her in the Jewer Section) on May 31, 1882. Fred J. J. Smith in the presence of Soloman Gosse and Susannah Chipman performed their wedding ceremony. Levi made his living as a fisherman and Elizabeth was a spinster5. In the 1921 Newfoundland Census of Spaniard’s Bay, Levi is remarried to a JESSIE (b: Nov 1877), indicating that Elizabeth died. It’s quite possible that she died between 1889 and 1896. Regardless, Levi was remarried and spent a considerable amount of his life with his second wife. He was on the 1924 Voter’s List and retired in the 1930s6. On February 26, 1937, Levi died in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland. He is buried in the Holy Redeemer Anglican Cemetery in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland. His tombstone has the inscription “Husband of Jessie” written on it.

Soloman Chipman was born in 1861 in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland and Bertram Jones baptized him on March 3, 1861. On December 1, 1884 he was married to MARY JANE JEWER (b: 1861; d: Jul 10, 1887). Theo Nurse performed their ceremony and it was witnessed in the presence of James Juer and Lydia Gosse. Soloman was a fisherman and Mary was a spinster. Mary died a few years after their marriage and is buried in the Old Holy Redeemer Anglican Cemetery in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland. Soloman was married again sometime between 1887 to 1892 to a JULIA (b: Aug 1861), who was from Bishop’s Cove, Newfoundland. They spent a great number of years together in Spaniard’s Bay. Eventually, Soloman ceased working as a fisherman and became a laborer. This could be a direct result of the Depression that forced many people to leave Spaniard’s Bay altogether. He died sometime after 1936.

6. SUSANNA CHIPMAN6 (OWEN1)
Susanna Chipman was born in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland on February 18, 1866 and W. F. Meek baptized her on March 18, 186611. JOHN BARNEY (b: 1860) from Lance Au Loup, Newfoundland married her on November 21, 1884. Theo Nurse in the presence of Levi Chipman and Soloman Gosse performed their wedding12. A search of the Newfoundland Census, Spaniard’s Bay in 1921 shows no listing for a John and Susanna Barney, indicating the left area sometime after being married.

7. EDWARD CHIPMAN7 (OWEN1)
Edward Chipman was born on August 31, 1868 in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland and W. H. Earle baptized him on September 7, 186613. Like his brothers, Edward was a fisherman. On November 1, 1890, he married SUSANNA HENNESSEY (b: 1868; d: May 4, 1910), who was a spinster. J. Arthur Evans in the presence of Owen and Diana Chipman performed their wedding ceremony14. He was married to Susanna for almost 20 years when she died on May 4, 1910. The date of her death is a week after the birth of her twins, George and Susanna. The possibility that she died from complications in childbirth is highly likely. The twins are not listed on the Newfoundland Census, Spaniard’s Bay, 1921, and taking the fact that they were baptized a day after their birth is a strong indication that they died during or shortly after birth. A few years after her death, Edward married ELIZABETH (b: Feb 1879; d: Apr 12, 1938). Edward had several children and lived to be 85 years old. He was on the 1924 Voter’s List for Spaniard’s Bay and was listed as being retired in the 1935/36 Newfoundland Directory. He is buried in the Holy Redeemer Anglican Cemetery in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland next to his wives, Susanna and Elizabeth.

8. OWEN CHIPMAN8 (OWEN1)
Owen Chipman was born on December 9, 1870 in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland and John Noel baptized him on January 8, 187115. He left the Spaniard’s Bay area early in his life as the only listing for an Owen Chipman that could be found was in the 1894 McAlphine’s Directory. However, this is more likely his father and not him.

9. DIANNA CHIPMAN9 (OWEN1)
Dianna Chipman was born on Jan 9, 1874 in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland and John Noel baptized her on February 22, 1874.

10. LILY LOUISIA10 (OWEN1)
There is no birth date listed for Lily, but according to records G. W. Gwellyn baptized her on September 7, 187417. This would make it impossible for her to be the child of Owen and Catherine, as only a mere 8 months would have passed from the time her sister was born. It’s most likely that she was born at a later date.

THIRD GENERATION

11. WILLIAM NATHANIEL CHIPMAN11 (NATHANIEL2, OWEN1)
William Chipman was born on January 21, 1884 in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland and Theo Nurse baptized him on February 2, 188418. He married a FRANCES (b: Aug 1897) from Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. Its possible that he was married a second time, as his tombstone states “Erected by son Maxwell and wife Emily". However, Emily could have been Frances, but the son Maxwell was not yet born in 192119. He is listed on the 1924 Voter’s List in Spaniard’s Bay. The Newfoundland Directory of 1935/1936 has a two Williams listed, one as a fisherman and the other as a laborer. He died April 7, 1945 and is buried in the Holy Redeemer Anglican Cemetery in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland.

(b: Aug 1896), who was also from Spaniard’s Bay. They stayed in his father’s household until at least 192125. He made his living as a fisherman and he is on the Voter’s List of 1924. In the Newfoundland Directory of 1935/1936 he is not listed, meaning that he left the area sometime between 1924 and 1935.

19. ABSALOM GOSSE CHIPMAN19 (LEVI3, OWEN1)
Absalom Chipman was born in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland on January 11, 1887 and Theo Nurse baptized him on February 4, 188727. Since most of the population of Newfoundland was Fishermen its safe to assume that he was one until he left for the United States. Around 1910, Absalom left Newfoundland and most likely entered America through the port in Boston. He made his living as a Carpenter and lived on Broadway Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts28. Shortly after arriving in America, he met and married Jane A. Norman (see her in the Norman section), who also immigrated to America from Newfoundland. Coincidentally, Jane was from Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, which is a community a few miles away from Spaniard’s Bay. The two of them were married in Lynn, Massachusetts on February 24, 1913 and Absalom continued to work as a Carpenter.
According to Absalom’s Grandson, Harley Alvin Warren, he was one of the best Carpenters around. He built his own shingled house at 99 Waverly Street, Arlington, Massachusetts and the house across the street29. He was described by his Grandson, as being a “short, stocky, bad-tempered, lovable old man”, who loved to drink his beer30. His daughter, Elizabeth Ferguson, described him as being hot-tempered and hard working. He was tattooed on both arms from the elbows down and had a dislike for Catholics, Jews, and Blacks, but that was how he was raised. He particularly didn’t like Catholics, as they could do whatever they wanted and at the end of the week be forgiven after they confessed31. Perhaps this stemmed from his time in Newfoundland, but its most likely came from him being a Non-Catholic living in an all Irish-Catholic neighborhood in Arlington. However, when he would drink he would dance to Irish music that he played on an accordion32. At times his fondness for beer would get him in trouble with Jane. For the most part she didn’t mind his drinking until he went on one of his drunken rampages and then she would find all the beer he had hide and pour them down the drain and break the bottles. Arlington was a dry town and Absalom had to walk more than two miles to Bowmen’s Liquor at the town limit to buy his beer. There he would buy the big quarts of Balentine Ale and on his way home he would stop off at the Sweeny’s house. When he knew that Jane wasn’t there he would sneak in the house and hide them. He had about 20 to 30 different places and there they would stay until he drank them or Jane poured them out. Despite his drinking, he was hard working and raised his children well, including his grandson, Harley. During the Depression he more than provided for his family with his hard work and love.
He was employed at the George B. H. Macomber Co. in Boston, meaning he had to take the trolley into the city each day. His wife, Jane, passed away sometime in 1955, leaving Absalom alone. In a letter to his daughter, Elizabeth, dated November 20, 1958 he writes, “Betty I don’t see any body[.] I am all alone looking at the ceiling all night – no one to talk to[.]”33 He died in June of 1969, leaving in his will that his three children and grandson, Harley, share his earthly possessions equally.34 He was a good man and gave his family the opportunity for success.

20. OWEN CHIPMAN20 (LEVI3, OWEN1)
Owen Chipman was born on March 10, 1889 in Spaniards Bay, Newfoundland and J. Arthur Evans baptized him on April 7, 188937. There is no record of him in any of the Newfoundland directories or cemeteries. It is thought that as soon as he was old enough he left the Spaniard’s Bay area.

21. HENRY CHIPMAN21 (LEVI3, OWEN1)
Henry Chipman was born in Spaniards Bay, Newfoundland in October of 1896. He is the son of Levi and most likely Jessie. This is because he is not listed as one the children by Levi and Elizabeth Chipman being baptized in the Newfoundland Vital Statistics – Volume 41/Spaniards Bay/Church of England/Baptisms (1860-1981). In 1921, he and his wife, Winnifred (b: Jul 1897), are listed as part of his father’s household on the Newfoundland Census, Spaniards Bay. Winnifred was from Tilton. There are no records of their deaths in Spaniards Bay, indicating that they eventually left the area. However, there is a Henry Chipman listed on the 1924 Voter’s List and the 1935/36 Newfoundland Directory.

22. JOHN CHIPMAN22 (LEVI3, OWEN1)
There is no documented evidence that John existed, but Absalom’s oldest daughter, Elizabeth, remembers a photograph of him in her home as a child. According to her, John was a sailor in the British Navy and was killed in World War I when a German Submarine sank his ship. Absalom’s oldest son was named after him38. In the Holy Redeemer Anglican Cemetery there is a ‘James Charles Chipman’. On the tombstone there is the inscription “Erected by Levi in honor of his son July 19, 1918; killed in action, Soissons, France”39. However, Soissons is located inland just north of Paris and it would be an extreme case if he was killed there being in the Navy.

Also on the census he is listed as ‘Harvey’, showing he went by his middle name. There is no indication of his death in Spaniard’s Bay and he could have moved elsewhere. However, there is a ‘Harvey Chipman’ listed on the 1924 Voter’s List and the 1935/36 Newfoundland Directory.
