John Hammers Dies Today
John Erwin Hammers, 86, a retired coal miner of Columbus, died this morning at
2:30 at the city hospital where he had been a patient since July 29. He had
been ill for the past month.
Born Oct. 6, 1875 in Atchison county, Mo., he was the son of John D. and
Fannie Smith Hammers. He came with his parents to Kansas when he was 13 years
of age and had resided in this area for 73 years. He and Cora May Stevens were
married Aug. 2, 1905, at Girard. Mr. Hammers worked in the coal mines of the
Weir area until his retirement. He had been a member of the First Baptist
church in Weir since Feb. 11, 1911.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Cora May Hammers; two daughters, Mrs. Anna
Porter of Altamont, and Mrs. Annette Matthews of Smithville, Mo.; two sons,
James Hammers of Aberdeen, S.D., and Bert Hammers of Dallas, Tex.; ten grand-
children and two great grandchildren. One sister and one brother preceded him
in death.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Jorden
funeral home. The Rev. Ronald Starr will officiate. Interment will be in Hosey
Hill cemetery near Weir.
Members of the family will receive friends tomorrow night at the Jorden chapel
between the hours of 7:30 and 9 o'clock.

Services Tomorrow for John Hammers
Funeral services for John Erwin Hammers, 86, of Columbus, who died yesterday
morning at the City hospital, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at
the Jorden chapel. The Rev. Ronald Starr will officiate. Interment will be in
Hosey Hill cemetery.
Members of the family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home, be-
tween the hours of 7:30 and 9 o'clock.
Among Mrs. Hammers' survivors is a sister, Mrs. Annette Weir, of Kewanee, Ill.
Her name was accidentally omitted from the list of survivors appearing in yes-
terday's Advocate.

Will Hold Open House Sunday To Celebrate Golden Wedding

Open House, in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary, will be held
Sunday, Aug. 7, by Mr. and Mrs. John Hammers of Columbus route four.
Friends and relatives of the couple are invited to their rural home between
the hours of 2 and 5 p.m. Their home is located one mile south of Blake's
corner, one mile east, one-fourth south and one-half east.
Although their anniversary is actually today, Mr. and Mrs. Hammers are
holding open house Sunday for the convenience of their friends.
Married in 1905 at Girard, Mr. and Mrs. Hammers have lived practically all of
their married life in Cherokee County. Mr. Hammers was a coal miner in the
Weir vicinity many years but is now retired.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Hammers were reared near Weir. She was the former Miss
Cora Mae Stevens.
They have four children and eight grandchildren.
The children are Mrs. Anna Porter of Altamont, James Hammers of Aberdeen, S.
D., Burt Hammers of Kansas City and Mrs. Mae Matthews of Kansas City. All have
taught in Cherokee county schools at one time.
The grandchildren include Johnnie and Billy Porter, Dorothy Kay Hammers,
Joseph Hammers and David, Connie, Danny and Dennis Matthews.

Cora Hammers...
Mrs. Cora Hammers, age 102, died at 9:32 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, in Maude
Norton Memorial City Hospital. She had been in failing health the past several
years.
Mrs. Hammers had resided at 405 W. Oak before moving to the Columbus Medical-
odge in 1981.
Born April 22, 1888, in Weir, she was the daughter of Peter and Anna Mattox
Stevens. She was married to John Hammers in 1905. He preceded her in death.
She had resided in the Weir-Columbus areas all of her life.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Columbus and was active as
long as she was able.
Surviving are one son, Bert Hammers, Loveland, Colo., and one duaghter, Mae
Matthews, Harrisonville, Ark.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Anna Porter, and one son, James
Hammers.
Graveside funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in Hosey Hill Ceme-
tery near Weir. The Rev. David Miller will officiate.
Funeral arrangements are in charge of Murdock Funeral Home, Columbus.

Services Thursday For Mrs. Hammers
Funeral services for Mrs. Cora Hammers, age 102, who died Tuesday, will be
held at the graveside in Hosey Hill Cemetery, Weir, at 2:00 p.m. Thursday. Mur-
dock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The Rev. David Miller will off-
iciate.
Among Mrs. Hammer's survivors is a sister, Mrs. Lula Graham, of the Pittsburg
Medicalodge. Her name was accidentally omitted in a list of survivors submitted
to the Advocate yesterday.

Graveside funeral services were held here Monday for James E. Hammers, 68, a
Weir native who died March 11, (1977) after an extended illness.

Mr. Hammers was born March 14, 1908. He was a 1926 graduate of Columbus High
School and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas. He was
a retired teacher and stock broker who made his home in Aberdeen SD for several
years before moving to Houston.

He was married to Violet Keisz Dec. 24, 1936, in Aberdeen. She survives. Also
surviving are a daugher, Mrs. Robert (Dorothy Kay) Brochman{sp}, and a grandson,
Houston, his mother, Mrs. Cora Hammers, Columbus; one brother, Burt Hammers,
Dallas; and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Porter, Altamont, and Mrs. Mae Mathews,
Kingston Ark.
