"WILLIAM HARRISON STEVENS-- farmer and proprietor of a saw mill of Rutland township, Meigs county, Ohio, was here born September 17, 1834. He was married in this township , October 28, 1855, Mary, daughter of Conrad and Margaret Phelps, becoming his sharer in the cares and comforts his life. She was born January 25, 1837, and her birth was in this county and township. Mr. and Mrs. Stevens are the parents of: Cedora Armilda (McHaffie), born April 26, 1857; Harriet Sarilda (Braley), January 13, 1859; John Franklin, September 15, 1860; William Perly, May 6, 1862; Nathan Elmer, January 16, 1864; Mary Arilla, June 28, 1867; James Royal, December 20, 1868; Carrie Elizabeth, January 18, 1871. John Stevens, father of William H., was born in Maine., November 23, 1810, and came with his father, William Stevens, to Meigs county in 1818. They were among the first settlers of the county, and their place of residence was on what is now the school lot of Rutland township. The life of John Stevens, since his eighth year, has been spent in Meigs county, all of it in Rutland township except two years when he lived in Scipio township. Dorcas McAboy, born in Prince William county, Virginia, October 8, 1807, came to Meigs county in 1818, and in later years was wedded to John Stevens. William H. Stevens was elected township trustee in 1882 for one year, and in the fall of 1882 was elected infirmary director for three years. Langsville, Meigs county, Ohio, is his post office address."
