Hutchinson
Massachusetts
Coat of Arms
HUTCHINSON:
English, patronymic derived from Hutch, a pet form of the Christian name HUGH 'spirit'; in the north of England the popularity of the name owes much to St. Hugh, Bishop of Lincoln (1186-1200), and it was intensified by the death of the nine-year-old boy martyr, Hugh of Lincoln, according to legend crucified by the Jews in 1255, several French saints living during the surname epoch also added to the luster of the name.
