ALEXANDER:
(1) (British, others). "Defender of men" (Greek); often through the two Scottish kings. Name taking - or based on - the first name of the ancestor's father (patronymic).
(2) 'Helper of mankind' a popular name with kings, saints, and popes throughout all Europe from ancient times very common in Scotland 'due' in part to the three Scottish kings with that name in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
