A raiz del accidente del Columbia, Widdie nos escribio a todos los de la "red familiar" y aprovecho para actualizarnos en cuanto a sus hijos:

February 10, 2003  - Thank you all again for your prayers and letters of encouragement. For those who were using the old Juno email address, I didn't realize we fell short of notifying you of our address change. Although we enjoyed Juno's inexpensive $9.99 monthly fee, on line dial-up fell short of meeting our needs. Chrissy and Richie have both entered the infamous teenage years and use the Internet for their school studies, to communicate with friends on IM (instant messaging) and to check their email. As you can imagine, not only was our phone line tied-up all night but the squabbling of who was getting on first was not only maddening but also entertaining. So instead of obtaining a second phone line we decided to get high-speed cable. What a difference, for one, there's peace and two, we liberated our phone line. We also purchased a wireless distribution hub, which allowed us to run more than one computer simultaneously. Sure, we're paying a few dollars more than if we had a second phone line but the investment was well worth it.

As far as the Columbia investigation, NASA is gathering data from everyone and anyone who had anything to do with ground and flight processing support. My group is the Instrumentation Operations & Maintenance department. We are involved with Shuttle Modal instrumentation, which tests the structural integrity of the Shuttle's airframe without having to remove the heat tiles. We also instrument the holdown posts used for stacking the Solid Rocket Booster segments, the Mobile Launch platforms, Launch Pads and we also maintain the meteorological systems at both Launch Pads. Although we are not directly involved with the investigation, our data has been impounded is
being utilized to aid in the investigation, especially the Modal tests. NASA has been extremely forthcoming with information and to our surprise; the news media has reported events in a responsible and compassionate way.

Chrissy is now 16 years old going on 25. She will be a senior next year and so far has a 3.85 GPA. Kathy and I will be meeting with her guidance counselor this coming Tuesday to discuss opportunities for college -Wow, where did the time go? Chrissy is also active in school sports, has played volleyball for 2 years and has lettered in basketball. Both Richie and Chrissy sing in the high school music choir and ensemble and have received superior ratings in statewide singing competitions. Richie loves opera and has performed solos in italian. Both have been blessed with beautiful voices and were chosen by Disney World to sing at Epcot in their "Christmas Candle Light Procession". Richie is also doing well in school, but we have to "keep-on-him" to do his homework. He is now 14 1/2 years old, is 5'10" tall
and weighs 230 lbs. Yes, he lifts weights and is on the school football team. He has 17" biceps, an 18" neck, and an intimidating flattop haircut. His shoulders are so wide that he now wears an XXL shirt. The boy eats like a horse! The refrigerator no longer makes ice cubes because the door stays open all the time. Kathy is still teaching high school calculus, trig, physics and algebra. As though that wasn't enough, they recently promoted her to the position of "Dean of Discipline". We still can't figure out if this was a promotion or a cruel joke :o). The students have affectionately named her "The Angel of Death". All kidding aside, Kathy has the gift of counseling. She sometimes gets letters, Christmas cards and unexpected visits from some of her old students (now in college) thanking her for the impact she made on their lives. I haven't written in awhile and so I thought I'd catch everyone up on our family. I apologize for not writing sooner and hope all doing well. I will spare you the standard song of how busy we are (and we are), but in the end, there are no excuses.
Love to all
Widdie

Thanks for the great update on the family.  If you say "where did the time go?" can you imagine what it is for us?  It was just but
a little while ago when you came down to Barranquilla to spend your summer with us (and I had already been working for 12 years),
and just think of all that has happened since!  I'm glad the kids are doing fine, and thrilled about all they are accomplishing!
Please give them and Kathy all our love.  When will you be coming up this way?  There is ample room for all.

Love, Jorge Polo
