The Texas Longhorn No other animal personifies the lone star state, the only state that was a separate nation before joining the union, quite like the Texas Longhorn. These long-horned cattle were raised in great numbers throughout the southwest territories of the United States in the 19th century. Many cowboys were injured by unruly longhorn bulls during the era of the great cattle drives. Later, these magnificent animals were bred with English stock to create today's improved beef and dairy breeds.
