Welcome To The: Winslow Words And Phrases Page!!!
This page is dedicated to the odd way that people from Winslow, Arizona talk to one another and the funny way that people from anywhere else in the world look at us and say, "what the F?"
1. "all kinds"-(can be quaintitative and qualitative)-to show that a certain topic is (in quantitative reasoning) of many. e.g. "we went running all kinds" and "i want all kinds of chili fries with all kinds of cheese" ( or in qualitative reasoning) very much so. e.g. "she was hot all kinds" and "i was scared all kinds
2. "look-it" or "look-at" also could be said as "loo-kit" or "loo-kat"- a word used to get someones attention. sort of like the common interjection, "listen" e.g. "listen, bill, i know what you are saying." e.g. "Look-it, guys, you don't know what youre talking about."
3. "hang"- to spend time with a person, usually a good or close friend. usually said when there are no plans of what to do while the said people are planning on spending time. e.g. "look-it, we should hang, all kinds." (other person) "what should we do." (first person) "i don't know but we'll just hang." (not nessecarily native to winslow but overly used)
4. "creek it up"- to "hang" at the local swimming hole "Clear Creek".
5. "man-dude"- an exlamation of frustration or on the other extreme, excitement. e.g. "man-dude, i won the race of the century!" or "man-dude, my dog died today". could also be used as a phrase of consolation e.g. (first person) "my dog died today and i'm sad all kinds" (second person) "man-dude, that sucks"
6. "freakin' A"- a show of anger and/or frustration. e.g. (first person) "man-dude, your girlfriend likes me, all kinds" (second person) "freakin' A! I'm not going to hang with you anymore!" (used most by and around a mormon)
7. "gunna"- a shortened slang way to say "going to" ususally accompanied by the understood "I" or "you". e.g. "gunna kick your ass." similar to "wanna" which is short for "want to"
8. "da dorm", " 'ere dake dat", "ova der", "tsss, anyway", "shiiii' "- typical indian udderances that only a Winslow native could translate for you.
9. "but still"- a reasurance that a persons argument still stands in effect against anothers e.g. (person #1) "Dream Theater's drummer is awesome!" (person #2) "Yeah, but man-dude, Tool's drummer can do sextuplets with his feet" (person#1) "But still....ya know...Mike plays all kinds of hard stuff"
10. 'member-a shortening of the word "remeber" e.g. "'member that one time we hung?"
Another thing I've noticed since I've moved to Flagstaff is the difference in the way that people from Winslow pronounce thier words. Here are some examples. (the first word is the correct pronounciation the next is the winslow version): 1. Mountain/ maow'n (the ' signifies a pause in place of the "t" followed closely by a short burst of air and the "n" 2. mormon/ mormin 3. catholic/ cathlick 4.computer/ kumpeudur 5. probably/ probly Also, if there is anyway that a person from Winlsow could possibly shorten a sentence they do so, but only so that they can save breath and energy to add in other Winslow words. Some examples would be (same rule as above applies): 1. "Excuse me, where did they go?" / "Dude, where'd they-go." The hyphenation of "they" and "go" signifies the quickness of the ending of "they" and the begining of "go" so the resulting pronounciation is "thago" with the long "a" sound. 2. "I would rather have a glass of coke with ice in it." / "...but still, gimme, coke-wit(z)h-ice, dude." Again, the hyphenation of the words signifies the quickness of the ending of one word and the begining of another (so the result of prounciation would be "coakwiviys") also if you notice the "wit(z)h" this is because of the special way that Winslow people use the "th" tool. When they use this tool, for some unknown reason they very faintly insert a gentle buzzing sound that can't be spelt phonicaly (only noticed audibly). This buzzing is only used when the subject is in a comfortable conversation. If the person says only a word with "th" in it then the impediment is not present. 3. "I'm sorry. I didn't understand what you said." / "...huh?" 4. "Good-bye. I will see you in a little while." / "later"
12. dude- a word that can mean either a boy or a girl, old or young, and can come anywhere in a sentence. e.g's: Dude, I've never seen that" or "I've never seen that, dude" and "Look-it, dude, i don't know why your pissy all kinds, but if you don't want to hang then im not down. Freakin' A!" Can be used as a pronoun or as a modifier.
11. down- a word that describes the way a person feels about an upcoming activity. it lets others know if the person will be attending. e.g. (person#1) "Man-dude, there's a tool concert coming up, gunna go?" (person#2) "I'm down. But let's creek-it up all kinds before we buy tickets."
