Notes for Francois Chadoin:

Francois Chadoin, our first known American ancestor is identified by a book of early Virginia Baptists, a wanted poster appearing in the Virginia Gazette, Sept. 2, 1757, early deeds Manakin Town an early Huguenot settlement just west of what is now Richmond, Virginia, tax records of Cumberland Co., Virginia and debtors list of Cumberland Co., Virginia published in 1796.
The wanted poster describes Francois as 5 foot 4 inches tall, 140 pounds, dark complexion, about 39 years of age, a barber by trade and born in France. 40 shillings was the price on his head for deserting the Virginia Militia durning the French and Indian War. There is no evidence so far that he was apprehended. In 1700-01 over 300 French Huguenot refugees were settled by the colonial authorities on the south bank of the James River in King William Parish (10 thousand acres donated by King William III), Manakin, Goochland Co., Virginia.
Francois was not an orginal landowner in Manakin Town, but did own 50 acres there at one time and a town lot.
