Ethics in Health and Science (general)

´ The Online Ethics Centre for Engineering and Science

I have directed you to the Online Ethics Centre’s home page; be sure to explore its links as many core issues related to Health Sciences are available.  There are scenarios to explore (with guidance) and various codes of ethics.

´ Medical Ethics or Ethics in Science

There are several links on this page which direct you various aspects of ethics: in law, in psychiatry, in research and so on.  I have not been able to load any of the material so far – links take too long to open.

  ´ Bioethics and Medical Ethics

This is a collection of essays available on the Web from the 29th World Congress on Ethics.  Topics are varied but include a few essays on cloning, Xeno-transplants, genetic engineering, etc

The Bioethics Internet Project is supposedly the largest ethics-related site on the Web.  It is produced and maintained by the Centre for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania.  It appears to be a very good site indeed with daily revisions of news in Bioethics, information on new technological or scientific developments, an extensive list of conferences (which may yield more papers and research material) as well as some key permanent links to such topics as cloning, genetics, and the ownership of life.  There is also a “Bioethics for Beginners” link; I particularly recommend the introductory article.

  ´ Ethical Links

This site gathers material on ethics into three categories: institutions and resources, discussions and texts, and journals – online or print.  A little pursuit among these links might go a long way to connecting ethics with a professional or organizational stance.

  ´The Institute for Global Ethics

From PBS comes this transcript of an interview on the question of the Right to Die.  It was aired in March of 1996 and shows some of the reasoning process behind ethical decisions that are voiced by medical professionals.

´ Health Canada Online

The left side of this Home Page offers various "Fast Find" topics such as AIDS, Drugs, GM Foods, Pharmacare - AND MORE - which might provide good information for research.  I think this site has some real contemporary relevance.

´ Euthanasia ad Physician Assisted Suicide

Both sides of the issue are presented in this About.com effort.

´ Doctor Assisted Suicide: A Guide to WEB Sites and Resources

This appears to a rich gathering of information and links on the topic.

´ CTV's W5 has gathered its many features on issues which have a significant ethical impact.  I believe these are all only available as video feeds so you may need to upgrade some features of your software (I think " Real Player" is required but it is offered)

´ The Nuremberg Code

This is the Home Page for explanatory comments on the Nuremberg Code.  This 1947 document will probably be referenced more frequently in the coming years as a means of clarifying personal and professional issues on the use of humans in research.

´ Health Central

From Sympatico and Lycos is this regularly updated site which features articles and "columns" on health-related news.  It is presented in an online newspaper format and the topics suggest an additional resource for information on topics of relevance to one's reseach or interest.

´ The Centre for Bioethics and Human Dignity

This looks as though it could a very useful site as it presents a selection of regularly updates articles from international sources on the various aspects of bioethics

´ Ethics Matters

This is bi-weekly column from CNN and the Center for Bioethics (University of Minnesota).  The archive list seems quite varied in the topics covered.  You might need to refresh the page or visit the home page to get the most recent articles.

´ Whose Rights Take Precedence in Deciding on Abortion: Mother's or Father's?

One case to consider is available from the link below.  This will take you to the proceedings of the Quebec Superior Court which in 1989 decided that the initial injunction against the abortion obtained by the father was not valid and the woman was free to obtain an abortion.  It is rather lengthy, but the first section will provide the basic details.
