| Ulster 23 Munster 18 |
| The evening started in the sunlight in Belfast, with Paddy Johns leading Ulster onto the pitch for his last match. The less than full strength Ulster side got off to a fantastic start thanks to Paddy Wallace. In the first half he scored a try, conversion, 2 penalties and a fantastic drop goal. The squad started determined to beat the travelling Irish team, and gave the opposition little opportunity to impress in the first half. However, Munster pulled back 8 points before half time, starting with a Paul O'Connell try. To the shock of the Ulster fans, Andy Ward was given a yellow card and sent to the sin bin for 10 mins before the half time whistle. The second half proved to be a much closer contest between the 2 Irish teams. Munster closed the gap, and later took the lead 18-16 after a Peter Stringer try and Ronan O'Gara penalty. The score remained the same, and both sides pushed themselves to the maximum. Tension mounted both on the field (with several incidents between players) and off it (the thousands of Ulster fans seeing the Ulster victory slipping away). As the final whistle was approaching, tension mounting, Neil Doak broke free, kicked and chased the ball over half the length of the pitch. The Ravenhill crowd erupted as Doak went over the line, scoring Ulster's second, and winning, try. Doak received huge applause from the crowd as he returned to his teammates. Meanwhile, Paddy Wallace ensured Ulster's victory by converting the try. |
