My all time favorite comedians
David Letterman--a comic genius

Honorable mention:
Steve Allen
Steve Martin
Groucho Marx
Jerry Seinfeld
Red Skelton

Most likely to succeed Letterman
or Jay Leno
:
Conan OBrien (hes good; hes very good.)  (Update, 9-27-04:  Conan O'Brien was selected by CBS to replace Jay Leno in 2009.)  Conan's 1st year or so as a late night host was rocky; he only got month-to-month contracts 'cause the network didn't know if they'd keep him on.  Then he got much better with comedy, although it's slipped some during the past year.  The comedy skit he did around his 3rd year with Max the drummer firing a shot towards Conan with Conan's sidekick at the time, Jay, taking the hit, ending up face up on Conan's desk, with the clincher of Conan setting his pistol on Jay's stomach was awesome, a classic.
