Iroquois Life in the Past

a webquest designed for use by 3rd and 4th grade ESL students in conjunction with use of the IROQUOIS PEOPLE website
by Jennifer Patek

Introduction

You have been hired by the Westmere Art Museum to create a mural depicting life in an Iroquois village during colonial times.  This mural will be displayed in the front hallway of the school for all 4th graders to study and for other students to enjoy.  Parents and administrators will see your work and may ask you questions about what you have done.  This is a wonderful opportunity to share your expert knowledge about Iroquois Indians in an art project.

Task

You will work with a partner to illustrate Iroquois life on a large piece of paper.  Before you begin to draw you must find out about Iroquois life from webites on the internet.  Click on Resources to see this list of websites.

Process

1.)  With your partner, choose one of the following four topics:  Iroquois dwellings, Iroquios food, Iroquios women working, Iroquois men working.  Write your names next to the topic on a sign-up sheet provided by your teacher.

2.)  Click on Evaluation and print out the Notes Page and the Grade Sheet.  You should read the Grade Sheet to see how you will be graded for your work on this assignment.  You will be giving yourself and your partner a grade.  The teacher will give you a grade based on the same information.

3.)  Write the title of the topic you chose on the top line of the Notes Page.

4.)  Now you and your partner are ready to visit websites.  Click on Resources to find the websites for your topic.  Take detailed notes about your topic on the Notes Page.  This information will help you to do your drawing.  The more details you include in your notes and your drawing the more interesting your mural will be and the better your grade will be.  Take turns being the note taker and the computer operator.

5.)  After you have gathered as much information as possible from your websites you and your partner are ready to talk about your drawing assignment.  Decide how big your drawing should be on the sheet of paper.  Many people will see your picture so it should be large enough to see easily.  Decide who will draw what parts and what you will use to complete the drawing (markers, crayons, or colored pencils).  Draw a rough draft on a separate piece of  notebook paper first for practice.

6.)  Show your rough draft to the teacher before you begin to draw on the mural.

7.)  Begin your work on the mural.  Other groups of students may be working on another part of the mural at the same time.  Work together to decide on the placement of your drawings on the mural.

8.)  When you are done with your drawing you need to label the parts in as much detail as possible.

9.)  Give yourself and your partner a grade on your work together.  Fill in the grade sheet that you printed out in step 2 and hand it in to your teacher.  Congratulations!  Your work will be displayed in the museum as soon as all artists are done with their assignment.

Teacher's Notes

The websites in the resource section of this webquest are the same ones used in the building of the IROQUOIS PEOPLE website.  Through completion of this webquest your ESL students should be able to incorporate what they have learned from this content support website as well as practice reading from websites linked to the outside internet.  Students should complete all of the quizzes under the various headings from the IROQUOIS PEOPLE website before starting this webquest so they are familiar with the content and feel more confident about the assignment.  Encourage students to include as much detail as possible including for example, the correct clothing for the women and men and the layout of the garden where food is grown.

Materials needed:
printing capability
one large sheet of white butcher paper
a sign-up sheet for pairs of students to decide which topic they want to research
(Iroquois dwellings, Iroquois food, Iroquois women working, Iroquois men working)
